Is this possible?

Found this on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=31271

will need to copy and past into browser.

1988 checkmate with blown 454 that runs 104 mph and possibly 110 with a prop change?

Maybe I missed something

BLee 09-23-2003 10:26 AM

That is the worst exaggeration/lie I've seen yet.

Formula311-SR1 09-23-2003 10:28 AM

I figured it would be a good laugh. :)

HiPerf2000 09-23-2003 10:32 AM

That is pretty bad. I'd say 73mph.

and he must be dislexic(sp?) cause he lists

" a freshly rebuilt 454 With a 471 Blower on top"

that is the B&M 174 blower. probably making under 500hp.

lottawatta 09-23-2003 10:34 AM

Judging from his feedback on his last item sold, anyone who bids would be crazy.

KCHOTBOAT 09-23-2003 10:48 AM

He must have been drinking when he listed that boat. Maybe low 70's.

Definitely funny. What do these people think? How would he explain on the sea trail/test drive where the missing 20-30mph went? Geez

Maybe he meant

Possibly 110 with a different hull and motor :D

Maybe he would try to blame the 30mph loss on salt water VS. fresh water speeds, and maybe throw some elevation level differences in there :D

Roger 1 09-23-2003 11:01 AM

104 over Niagra Falls maybe.

Dave M 09-23-2003 11:10 AM

Over 100 MPH without external steering and those little tabs? That guy must have some balls. :D

HiPerf2000 09-23-2003 11:33 AM

i sent him the following email....his response should be interesting :)

questions about the Checkmate:

How much horsepower is the motor making?
What kind of Outdrive?
What size/pitch prop is on there?
Is 104 mph on the speedometer, or a Gps?
is it possible to get a sea trial on the boat to verify the speed number before i purchase?

thanks
Mark

formula31 09-23-2003 11:33 AM

He pulls it on the trailer at 104. Then if he takes the prop off (drag) he can go 110. Sounds like normal ebay marketing to me. LOL

bobkatz 09-23-2003 11:41 AM

Anyone notice how clean the engine room was?

Wow! 110 with a prop change! Just imagine if he used some of this. Probably would see 120! Smokin!

Airpacker 09-23-2003 12:37 PM

You big bunch of sillys, thats in Kilometers per hour ;)

BadDog 09-23-2003 01:56 PM

And just why would you spend 7k on single exhaust? Must have included everything that the exhaust bolts to. How would you fit 16 people in a boat that size?

Gary Anderson 09-23-2003 03:04 PM

Airpacker
And that $7000 exhaust is in Canadian dollars.

I read it and they must have changed it. It says he got 74 MPH out of it and 80 with a prop change... Maybe he soberd up a bit?

WARPARTY36 09-23-2003 03:20 PM

He must have edited. It now says 74 or 80 w/prop change. Maybe he meant 1471 vs. 471?:D

HiPerf2000 09-23-2003 03:53 PM

it now also says it has a bravo 3 drive......

this was his reply to my email (this is before he edited the spped figures):

The guy that buit the motor said it was making 750 hp.
Im not sure of the pitch. I had a gps,the speedo says 75 and it was buried.
the out drive is a mercruiser.
We can take it out anytime you want.

Oh and BTW......
I have the same blower setup on my boat (B&M 174) on a worked 454 and it only makes 570hp. So he also has tacked on a few ponys along with the mph

Formula311-SR1 09-23-2003 04:15 PM

hi-perf-2000
You proabably helped someone out from getting screwed. Still exagerating, just not as bad.

:)

Roger 1 09-23-2003 04:50 PM

I would`nt want to ride in it without external steering. I`ll bet the stock setup is sloppy as well.

hugetime1 09-23-2003 05:02 PM

I will tell you from experiance that that boat will run in excess of 155mph with the horse power that he is running. but it will only get up and run that fast in 8' -10' chop, lets just say it likes the rough stuff. I drove a boat simalar to that in the early 60's with a lot less horse power and i was getting #'s like 135 or so on my gps. that boat right there will definatly suprise you. and as far as not having external steering that is because it is just to heavy to carry at those speeds, it would make it unsafe. another secret to getting a boat like this to go fast is to run alpha drives, they are lighter and you can spin them faster, but inorder to run an alpha drive with that kind of horse power with out blowing it to pieces you have to run very little drive oil or it will bog down the drive, this is what causes them to blow. if you have any other questions for me I will be glad to help, cuz I am an offshore expert.

BadDog 09-23-2003 05:06 PM

The 750 HP Canadian as well?

puder 09-23-2003 05:36 PM

This boat toped out at 74 mph.
Is capable of 80 with a different prop.

it could be a 4-71 blower. that is the equivalent of bm 174 or a wieand 177.

speedwise 74 seems high to me too. old heavy single engine hulls need tons of power to get up and go.

that was pretty funny :D :D :D :D

When you were running that boat back in the 60's, you should have taken a picture of the GPS with you Camera Phone to verify the speed. :D

Formula311-SR1 09-23-2003 10:06 PM

He changed from 104 after a few emails.
Was a good laugh for today
