OT - "Do Not Call" list gets blocked - WTF?

Some Bozo Federal Judge in Oklahoma has ruled that the FTC over-stepped its bounds in establishing the National "Do Not Call" list (which 50 million people have signed up for). The suit was brought by a group of - guess what - telemarketing companies. They're just pissed that they'll have to get off of their a$$es and go get a real job. Government officials expect that the decision will be overturned and the list will go into effect at some point in the future, but woe be unto any telemarketer that calls me after this....

CigDaze 09-24-2003 12:38 PM

Well, that's just a bunch of crap. That's the best bill that was put on the books so far this decade. Screw the telemarketing industry.

Tantrum 09-24-2003 12:39 PM

I think we should find out his number and drop him a line.

Three Days Only 09-24-2003 12:53 PM

Call him at dinner, just before and just after, then at 7:30 am on saturday morning, then just for kick call all day when he's at work and bugg his wife, then start all over everday with a differnt product. When he tells you that he's not intrested keep asking questions, and then just for kicks call back again.

We have just been telling all of them that those people no longer live her.

Sea Ya 09-24-2003 12:54 PM

Oct 1st all telemarketers are fair game. Home loans; I rent. Investors; I'm broke. Long distance carriers; I work for AT&T. Life insurance; I scuba dive and race boats. Dance lessons; I have a wooden leg. Credit cards; I'm on home confinement. I think you get the picture. Screw 'em.

Rick252 09-24-2003 01:21 PM

I wonder how much this cost the telemarkerters.

That friggin judge has to be on the take. He needs to be investigated

MillerLite88 09-24-2003 01:33 PM

Easy guys, I do agree that telemarketing can be a nuisance and a very disturbing practice but at the same time there are respectable businesses that use telemarketing in a professional manner. I personally run a telemarketing department for the worlds largest whitetail deer hunting organization. (I'm sure that there are also many of you that don't approve of that but that is another issue).

All we call is hunters, what I am saying is we pre-qualify the people we call as best as we can. So usually when we call a home, that person has an interest in our product. We are not calling every home on the block to sell a credit card or long distance service. When someone tells my guys that they are not interested, we simply tell that person to have a nice day. No rebuttals or talking you into something else. Although I am in the telemarketing business, I would never do the home remodeling, credit card, long distance type selling because I agree, they are quite a nuisance at times.

All I am trying to say guys is that there are a few good companies out there in this industry and us good ones have to take the bad rap along with the less reputable.

-Mark

I know what your saying, and it's bad that a few spoil it for other legit business'. The problem is, the bad seem to far out weigh the good ones. I have caller ID and I've got to the point that I won't answer the phone unless I reconize the number. I receive around 10-15 calls a day from "unknown" callers and lately as late as 10pm on weekends. Sorry, but if I'm looking for a product or service, I'll look in the yellow pages. I don't need someone to call and try to sell me something.

I'm one step closer to having NO home phone, I'm not gonna have these guys calling me all the time. TELEMARKETERS SUCK. END OF STORY.

MillerLite88 09-24-2003 04:33 PM

Hold up mopower,

Don't tell me what I should or shouldn't be doing nor what I care about. HeII, I get the same annoying calls you do bro but I have a family to feed and this is the way I do it.

If it makes you guys feel better to beat me up because you are pissed about some ruling then take your best shot but remember I didnt make the ruling and had no problem with the "no call policy" whatsoever. I was for it as a matter of a fact. I mean come on, Do you really think that we want to call someone's home that doesn't want us to? How much business sense does that make?

SS930 09-24-2003 04:48 PM

One of the telemarketing companies claimed the "No Sales Call List" is violating their right to free speech.

I'm all for free speech, right up to where it infringes on my right to privacy.
The news said that there's something like 50 million people signed up for this. I would think that make a clear statement that we don't want these calls.

If I heard it right they aren't just fighting the creation of this list but it's also the fact that the Federal Trade Commission is the one that did it. It should've come from the FCC.

Since the wife and I both have wireless phones the house line isn't used except for the security system. It only costs me $25.00 a month to keep it active and right now there isn't a phone hooked up to it.
When I have to give out a home phone number and I feel I'll be getting calls I might not want I'll list the house line. :D

Shah Mat 09-25-2003 05:36 AM

If I'm in the mood, I play with them..... I told one lady from AT&T that my family and I had Magic Beans and I didn't need AT&T. She then said... "Oh yea, how much are you paying them for long distance?" She was serious too!!! I told her my name was Jack and I started to explain the whole beanstalk thing and suddenly realized that I wasn't dealing with the most intelligent person on the planet and hung up.

If I'm not in the mood, I tell them that they have made a huge mistake and called my cell phone and I am being charged for the call. Seems to work because my unwanted calls at home have dropped some.

One day I even got a call form AT&T while I was at work. I work for Verizon BTW. I answered "Verizon",and the lady started with the sales speech and I had to just about yell to interrupt her and told her that this was Verizon..........A competitor of AT&T.... She had never heard of Verizon. WTF???

ofshore 09-25-2003 05:39 AM

Watching CNN when I came home last night they had on someone from the house of reps. that said they signed their version of a bill that would give the FTC the clear authority to make the DNC list. He also said he thought the Senate would have their version signed today (Thursday) and both of them would act on it by the end of Thursday to make sure the DNC list still goes into effect on October 1st. We'll see what happens!!

SHARKEY-IMAGES 09-25-2003 05:59 AM

If someone calls you again and again after being told not to call you, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that Harassment?
I'm not a Sue-happy person, but I think this would be one that would keep me off their list.
I believe they can be fined if they call you after being told not to.

Up to $11,000 per penalty. Go ahead - make my day. Call me again.

Between the 50 million people already signed up and the rapid actions of Congress, i see a clear message being sent here:

"Yo, telemarketers - Can you hear me now?"

Stop chuckling, spammers - YOU'RE NEXT!! :hothead:

When I moved down here to the shore this summer, the people at the Asbury Park Press were about to get shot for this. I would leave for the day, come home, and see that they called 12 times on the caller ID. Then they wold call a few more times at night - EVERY day. Pissed me off enough to actually go into the local office in person. (It's about 3 blocks from my house.) Never got another phone call from them after that day. :D

Budman 09-25-2003 09:17 AM

I agree that Tm is a huge nuisance. In the past, the phone usually rang at the most inopportune times - like when I'm upside-down in my bilge, or up on a ladder. I usually would rush to answer the phone expecting it to be someone I really want to talk to, only to hear them butcher my name - "Could I speak with Mr. Stimmiz?". I usually respond with "There's no one here by that name", which is the truth. If you can't get my name right I'm sure as hell not talking to you!

A whistle hanging by the phone works well for TM, as well as prank callers.

Seems like there was a comedian that I head on the radio who had some hilarious skits where he toyed with the TM's. I remember one where he asked a carpet cleaning company if they knew how to get bloodstains out of carpet - LOTS of bloodstains! :D

Oh yeah, Kentucky enacted a state-wide no-call list a couple of years ago. It seems to work, too - calls have dropped off drastically for me.

Love Machine 09-25-2003 10:15 AM

I think the telemarketers set up this law so they could send spam mail to whoever signed up!!! Their email distro list is up to 50 million.

:D

ofshore 09-25-2003 11:01 AM

Oh, the other part of CNN last night said the list of people not to call was already handed out to telemarketers so if the law doesn't come into effect the telemarketers just received a list of 50 million people they can now call.

NW_Jim 09-25-2003 11:28 AM

I would think telemarketers would embrace this policy. Why would they want to waste time trying to sell stuff to people who have clearly stated that they WILL NOT buy? It seems to me that they would have more time to call the people that MAY buy. Does not make sense to me.

hugetime1 09-25-2003 04:26 PM

One of the problems with the do not call list is that it hurts local business people like me, that call local people to make a living. I am in the investment business and have changed hundreds of peoples lives by giving them a brighter outlook on the future and it is all because i have called them. see most americans are procrastinators and with out people like me to push them along alittle these people could end up on our wellfare rolls when they retire causing your taxes to go up, because they just never got around to planning for retirement. Another reason the rule sucks is because if someone sighns up on the list I am not supposed to call them even if they are a client, so if there investments are tanking, I am not supposed to call them to let them know. I just called a guy about a week ago because i found $5000 in suspence with the company that this guy was intitled to but the company did not have a right address for this guy, so anyway I called him he told to to f@#k off and not to call again because he was on the do not call list. so guess what I won't, he he he.....

If I ever find "Ruth Hughes", who apparently had my phone number before I did, I'm gonna go off on her, because I sure as hell am sick of getting her phone calls a year and a half later. She must be on EVERY TM's list that is in existence. "Are you SURE Ruth isn't there?" WTF?? I started telling them that Ruth expired last night unexpectedly, from choking on a hairball. I usually get the silence, and then "click."

My other favorite that I get, because I sound young, is:

TM: "Is your mother there?"
Me: "No."
TM: "Do you know when she'll be back?"
Me: "Never"
TM: "Never? Seriously, is your mother there?"
Me: "Seriously, if you want to talk to my mother, you'll need to make a celestial phone call."
