Big V's w/ outboards, why not?
 

Other than the fact that they don't sound as cool, why is there so few 30'+ V bottom boats out there with outboards? OB's seem to kick some butt in the cats, what's with the V's?

Wellcraft made the 34' Scarab Raider, Powerplay makes a 33 for twins/tripples, and Tempest made a 32'. All very nice looking boats, but not excetionally high performers. And the cost of 3 250-300hp outboards is probably more than a couple 502s with bravos.

I would say the cost of outboards is cheaper. 3 280's would be about $45,000. 2 500 Efi's would be around $55,000 with bravos. The outboard version is also much faster.

I like to mount the out boards in front of the boat, study's show that they can pull faster that they can push, when i employed this technique, I gained about 27 mph on the gps because it would actually lift the whole boat out of the water and just pull it through the air, drastically reducing drag.

Thought of another, Midnight Express makes 38-45' boats with up to FIVE outboards. Guess they ran out of room on the transom.

The 39 Midnight express weighing in at 12,000 lbs. with a 9'3" beam did 76 m.p.h. with 4-300x's That's only 1320 horsepower. I would say that is pretty darn good. Imagine a similar offshore boat weighing in at 8,000 lbs. Trust me if I had the money I would show you the results.

I've been seeing them pop up on the sport fishers lately. I'm thinking the trend is going that way because the fishermen are used to and comfortable with outboards. The opposite is probably true for the go-fast boater looking at a large v-bottom.
