Cigarette t-shirt offends many!

This morning I participated in a half-marathon run (13.1 miles) as part of my 17 mile training run as I prepare for the NYC Marathon in 4 weeks. As luck would have it, the temperature was in the 40s when it began. So, I chose to wear a long-sleeved t-shirt.

I wore my navy Cigarette Racing Team shirt with the logo on the back and name down the left sleeve. Well, wouldn't you know it. In a crowd of tens of thousands, several people (I lost count) were aghast that I was wearing such a shirt. The offense was that I was (in their words) "a ____ loser promoting tobacco use to atheletes during a run." At first I felt I needed to explain the shirts origins, then I decided that those offended:
-couldn't read
-were probably sailors

So, I started to revel in the irritation I caused! I felt that was the appropriate response. So whenever I heard some idiot, I'd just smile and quickly strive to pass them while straining not to breathe hard so as to appear to be kicking their butts! :D

So, everyone who comes to NYC's Central Park should proudly wear an article of clothing that might irritated those that can't read! It's great fun. :p

I wear mine to school. Teachers get pissed off because it "Promotes tobacco use" and I have been searched a few times, but Im not stupid enough to have anything to get in trouble at schoo. I did explain the shirt the first few times though.

I had the same thing happen at the club where I work out. I had to explain it to the chick and then it was ok.

Shanghied Again 10-05-2003 07:22 PM

Hey the school my son goes to sent him home because his shirt said Damn Donzi.
I guess they couldn't read Offshore Race Team and then they had a sit down talk about morals to me and my wife! We laughed these folks are supposed to be educated?

GO4BROKE 10-05-2003 07:28 PM

We laughed these folks are supposed to be educated?

People with no life need to make nothing into something. Makes them feel important. And a higher education has nothing to do with intelligence.

I was asked what brand of "cigarette" i worked for when going through the airport security at Little Rock Ark from a friends shotgun wedding that weekend! I laughed :D and the guy proceeded to tell me he prefere the chewing tobacco!

super termoli 10-06-2003 08:30 AM

well, i had a hustler powerboat shirt that was regularly associated with the porn mag, Larry Flynt and all that. And yet, it had a big drawing of a boat all over the back of it but that did not seem to help.

Wardey 10-06-2003 08:36 AM

I have been stopped, mostly by little old ladies, in the mall and other various places and asked why I wear a shirt that promotes tobaco use. I used to tell them the story but now I just shrug them off.....Dave

Going through security at Indianapolis airport 3 weeks ago I was informed that my shirt was innapropriate by the female security worker because it had "Eliminator" on it. She thought that was a bad thing to wear on an airplane. DUH,ya. OK lady.

jpclear 10-06-2003 11:28 AM

I kinda know the feeling. I take a bit of abuse on occasion cause of the make (which is also the name) of my boat. --- Jer

I better not wear my Magnum marine tee shirt then, they will really think something is up. They will definitely be frisking me for a loaded gun!! My god people are so stupid!!

THRILLSEEKER 10-06-2003 12:29 PM

An idiot at a local steel distributor once looked at the Cigarette oval sticker on my truck window and ignorantly asked me....."WHAT KIND OF DUMBASS RACES WHEN HE SMOKES?" I tried to explain it to him, but I think too many years of drug use probably prevented him from even comprehending the word "boat"

Tantrum 10-06-2003 12:33 PM

I think if you guy's had a hat to go with that T-shirt that said something along the lines of "WHAT THE F' ARE YOU LOOKIN AT" these people would tend to not be so vocal.
Well thats a good NYC stratagy anyway.

Strategy wouldn't work here. People would think:

-they need to respond to the question

-or-

-they would still make assanine comments, but without actually looking at me! :D

These people really are incredibly stupid and arrogant! That's a bad combination.
