Is Flordia really that Good to live in ??

have a oppturnity to go possibly go to work on the west side of the state FL that is. What I was wondering is Flordia as nice as they say..have heard many nice things..But does it get that hot in the summer and can you boat or is it not like it use to be with the manatee now wake zone ??? look forward to the imput??? thanks RUDY

CigDaze 11-24-2003 12:42 PM

I really don't think it's that hot here. Honestly, it doesn't get much above 92 in this area. It can be really humid in the summer months, but it's livable. After your first year, you'll hardly notice, only that you get cold when it dips under 70.

RollWithIt 11-24-2003 12:49 PM

Tell me about it. When I was visiting last February, I heard people complaining about how they had to eat inside at the restaurants because it was too cold out. My god, it was in the mid 60's. When I left Pittsburgh, it was 14 degrees and that did not include windchill.

R Addiction 11-24-2003 12:50 PM

I'd live there but my wife say's NO!!!!!! Nick you got a backyard I can set up my tent in??;)

Clay Washington 11-24-2003 12:57 PM

Let's see... Nice boating weather all year long, plenty of water to boat on, and no state income tax.

Sounds almost as good as Texas!

Agreed,

I have bben here for 1 1/2 years, first summer seemed hotter than H@ll, First winter, was frickin Beutiful nothin like going boating in Jan, then calling your buddies up, to find out they are outside shovelin SNOW!!!!! Second summer, never really noticed how hot it was til boating one day, left the house with a cooler full of beer and Ice in the boat, made a half hour trip to the ramp, and a one hour ride to the island, throw the anchor, reach in, and nothing but beer in cold water, when I lived in CT, The ice would stay all day. Now that the second winter is here, I can tell I have adjusted, I was actually cold in Key West over the weekend!!!!!

As far as the no-wake zones, We hate them, but it is a fact of life we have to deal with, You can do what ever you want once you get out into the ocean, it is just the canals you have to be concerned with.

Here is a picture to Steer you in the right Direction, you tell me if its worth it???????

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. We have beaches lakes rivers and boating year round we complain when it gets in the 70's because were spoiled with so much good weather we hate to see any cool weather at all. I jumped in the pool on Saturday after taking a run on bayshore Dr. This picture is a good representation of how it looked on Saturday.

Only in Miami. Plenty of english here. ;)

CigDaze 11-24-2003 01:35 PM

Oh ya...btw, it was in the 80's this weekend, cloudless blue skies, light breeze, 1-2' seas. Priceless!!

BobbyB 11-24-2003 01:42 PM

I have a friend of mine that has a house in tampa and loves it and he also has a house here in maryland. But his business keeps him from moving down there fulltime.

Dirty Race Girl 11-24-2003 01:42 PM

I have to agree with everybody - it's a great place to live. Coming from Texas, where it was 100+ degrees for 30-60 days straight in the summer, this Florida heat is NOTHING.

Nothing like pulling up at jet ski at Bahama Breeze on the causeway, to have a BahamaRita in November or December :)

GatorDave 11-24-2003 01:48 PM

I've lived in Florida virtually my entire life. I can't imagine living anywhere North of here:D As the others have said you adjust quickly to heat and humidity. After that it's 9-10 months of boating a year. It would be 12 months if I lived at the other end of the state!

MOVING TO FLORIDA

After 6 years on Puerto Rico we have decided to move back north to Florida. We thought hard on SoCAL but all things considered, meaning $$$, we've decided to check out Florida, for a few years anyway.

No, the stories are true. Florida sucks, its hot, the mosquitos will carry you and your dog away, all the waters are 5 mph thanks to the manatee, gas is outrageous, and the folks are unfriendly. Stay out.. errrr, I mean home.. :D :D :D

Iggy 11-24-2003 02:48 PM

Florida is a beautiful place. Unlike any other I've been to.

Living in Florida is culturally different.
Florida has it's own way of doing things. One of the first bumper stickers I saw said "We don't care how you did it up north". That's a true statement, they really don't care. You'll also learn the difference between a Yankee and a Damn Yankee.

Troutly is correct brush up on the Spanish. Where I live english speaking is in the minority. And I don't live in Miami. Most of my neighbors are from Puerto Rico. I'll bet there's no more than a handful of english speaking families on my street. Most of them are really nice people, then there's some that don't speak a word of english.

My dad always said that life is at a slower pace in Florida. Not true. I work harder and hustle more here than back in Jersey.

The heat? No problem. The only thing I hate about it is that it's monotonous. In the summer it's 95 deg. with a 40+% chance of rain.....every day from May till September and the fiercest lightening storms I've ever seen. Toss in Hurricane season from June to December along with the occasional tornado just for fun.

Would I live anyplace else? Not sure.
I like it here, in Florida. I just don't like where I'm living. Maybe I need to get away from the heavy tourist areas. The running joke is that Orlando and Kissimmee are a suburb of Disney (Mickey Rat, Mouse House, etc).

The best thing to do is come on down, see things for yourself. Talk to the locals. Check prices on housing, food, insurance, clothes, utilites, etc. If you have kids look at the schools.

That picture is of the Sands restaurant/hotel. Florida is great for all year around boat. I hate Manatee zones though!

Dean Ferry 11-24-2003 03:33 PM

Florida is GREAT for Boating, EXCEPT for the MANATEE ZONES!
Merritt Island IDLE King!!

There are two types of people on this site.
Those who live in Florida and those who want to live in Florida

Rudy,

If you have the job lined up or will get a job that will be able to financially provide you with the ability to sustain your current lifestyle, then do it. I moved down to Boca Raton, working in Ft Lauderdale for a little over a year, but my new occupation down there did not allow me to sustain the same lifestyle that I had/have here in Chicago, so I moved back. Once I have that sorted out, I will be going back to S.E. Florida :)

There are alot of deadbeats down there though, and sharks that come at you with all kinds of get rich quick scenarios / schemes / investment possibilities. Decline them all.

gdfatha 11-24-2003 07:07 PM

After living in So Cal (Woodland Hills-Norts territory) for 40 years I came here for a management consulting contract for a year.

After the year was up and job completed I reorganized my thoughts and came up with the following;

-All up the weather is better here
-Generally the cost of living is about half that of So Cal
-There is an abundance of waterways where one can boat-lakes-rivers-the Gulf and Atlantic
-There is some traffic problems but nothing like that of the 101 , 5, 118 and 405 I experienced in So Cal.

Today was 82 degrees, dry but unlike Baja, there were 17.6 puffy clouds in the entire sky. A cold wave is on the way.. Highs will remain about 80 and lows will drastically dip to the mid sixties...

More "ups" than downs. Grew up in Florida, went north for 18 years, came back. Don't intend on ever shoveling snow again, I'd rather be changing my plugs in my boat. Instead of winterizing, I'm enjoying. My two cents anyway.

georges 11-24-2003 07:55 PM

And, don't forget..........never use your turn signals once you move here!:D :D :D

Have you spent any time in Floriduh? If you haven't, you should come down and spend a few days, look around the area where you are going to be living and see if it fits.
Don't worry about the humidity and summer heat stuff, (you'll learn to love it) in one year or less, like everyone else said.
We too were wearing long sleeved sweatshirts and long pants in the evening in KW this last week, when the temperatures dropped into the high 60's low 70's during the nights!  :D

I agree Troutly. You also have to have a high tolerance for bugs - lots of em' and everywhere. There are those wonderful Palmetto bugs which are basically huge, flying cockroaches. I lived in Homestead (south of Miami) for 6 years. The winters weren't bad but the summers were hot and the mosquitoes were thick. The crime rate very high too. I'd never move back there again!

Wasabe 11-24-2003 07:58 PM

I LOVE FLORIDA! If it weren't for work and my Babe I would be out there in a heart beat!

I LOVE FLORIDA!:D

georges 11-24-2003 08:12 PM

As far as bugs go, we NEVER see those palmetto monsters inside.
I have seen them occasionally, at night, but only outside by the docks.
Since we are less than a mile from the ocean, we are on deep waterfront, we always have a cooling breeze, we don't even have screened pools in this area, and we have no mosquitos either!
It all depends on where you live in Florida.
:D

I have a cousin that lives in Florida and I asked him one time about the bugs (Roaches)
He responded that if they are in your house, they are called Palmetto bugs. If they are in your neighbors house, They are f*cking cockroaches!!:D :D :D

By the way Flordia is not the correct spelling of Florida.:) :)

I am moving back to the Palm Beach area as we type.

I have lived in Atlanta for 10yrs.(except a 1yr. Vegas vacation) and could not stop coming home to visit.
Now that my boats are costing as much as some houses I decided I wanted to use it all year if I had to pay for it all year.

I liked Atlanta, loved Vegas, but my home and my heart have always been in Florida. I just brought down the first load of crap from Atlanta this weekend and today I heard myself call Palm Beach home for the first time in memory.

Give it a look first, different coasts for different folks.

If you start to think about the Ft. laud. area contact "hebertnecessity" he sell real estate.(real name is Hugh)

Greg

georges 11-24-2003 10:52 PM

We have and exterminator that comes around once a month, and sprays the place inside and out. That's what keeps the bugs outside and invisible to us.
The only things I see crawling around outside are the little lizzards and we love those little guys, because they eat those big guys!:frog:
