It sounds like he was "pedaling" the throttle just before it blew. That might have been the cause. Unburned fuel in the intake and then a backfire. Ouch!

Wish I could cause imports to blow like this with a remote control. I'd love seeing the jackasses reving their engines and me hitting the magic button! Wouldn't that be great.
