First Time Buyer Advice
I am looking to buy my first boat and want to make sure I can afford it. I have a good idea of the cost of the boat, insurance, and storage. What are my ballpark maintenance and other expenses going to be? I am looking at something in the 25-32 foot range that will be kept in a wetslip.
Thanks |
what year, motors, drives, type of boat. on the water or on a lift? how many hrs?

Take all the #'s you have for cost of boat payment , insurance, and storage, multiply x4 and you should be about right:cool:

Looks like fuel is missing from that equation. :D

Ok, if you are planning on leaving it in the water, you'd better plan on having the bottom painted on occasion. What about winter storage? You'll need a trailer or a cradle. |
Hey Jayhawk! Where are you from? Are you watching the game tonight?

As others have alluded, it is difficult to fully asses the costs associated with owning a boat. It has a lot to do with how you use the boat and how well you take care of it. Boats require a fair amount maintenance to keep in good shape. The cost can vary greatly depending on the amount you do yourself or pay someone to do. Make sure you can easily handle the basics which include the items you identified plus fuel.
One thing to remember about boating: There are two good days in a boaters life; The day you buy the boat and the day you sell the boat. That is not totally true.......but it has some truth to it:D :D |

SY You have me laughing my azz off here! But that about sums it up .
My ex bought me a wall plaque " To experience owning a boat stand in a cold shower and tear up $100 dollar bills" That is a close one also. :) |
$50.00/hour when its running.
$500.00/hour when its not  |
After careful consideration of all the costs...better figure it's probably low because you certainly missed something or under estimated something else , or worse , both:crazy:
We're all crazy on here:D Good luck:rolleyes: |

Thanks I assume your are in some type of fresh water lake since you have a "wet slip". Bottom painted boats are cheaper and probably preferable to you. Stick with a cheaper single to learn. If you don't like the boating lifestyle your loss will minimal. If you get bit then upgrade. Insurance can range between $250-$5000/year depending on speed and your experience. Stay under 60mph and you will probably be around the $250 mark. Local storage is locally priced. TAKE A SAFE BOATING COURSE! Cheaper insurance and you learn the rules of the road. (spell check not working sorry) |
Jayhawk - I saw a survey once that said the average annual cost was 15-25% or the purchase price per year. Unfortunately that seems to be just a little low from my experience.
