Default Towing with a 2wd truck?

Anyone tow with a 2wd truck? I've got a line on a new 2004 F-150 Supercrew, 2wd with the 5.4 3 valve engine and a 3.55 limited slip rear end.

Would that work for a boat up to say 27'? Short tows from the storage yard to the ramp, with *maybe* a longer one here or there.

That truck will tow that boat any where to the ramp, but have fun at the ramp if its wet or green.

We've hit this one before. If you have to ask the question now...

Wouldn't it suck to be smacking yourself in the the forehead breathing through a snorkel in the cab if your truck since you slipped down a ramp, with your boat behind you?

4WD, worth a million bucks the time you need it.

Mine is a 2wd and I have never had an issue. The ramps I use are in fairly good condition as well. It is an 02 2500HD chevy SRW truck.

I've never towed in 4wd but have had to use it at the ramp a few times. You won't slide into the water because the brakes will hold you, but the first time you can't get the boat out you'll be pissed!!!

I'm feeling a little better about this deal after hearing some of the success stories. Even though I live in Michigan, I can count on one hand the number of times I've used 4WD in my past trucks (since we sold the sleds, anyhow).

Now to beat the dealer up about my trade....

Lake should be no problem. A friend had a Ford F350 dually and at low tide...on the slimey part of the ramp he has more than once slipped and slid
I have a 27'r and twice last season I hit dead low coming back and HAD to use 4 wheel. Most of the time you should be alright. Then again it also depends on the ramp.

Like Sydwayz said "It's worth a million buck when you need it".

I have had the same truck for 2 years now but its 4WD.. In 15 years of towing just about every weekend in the summer, I have NEVER needed to use 4WD, I've had it but never needed it... been on some slick ramps, but never w/ a 27footer, that might make a difference..

We have a 2wd F-350 that's used to tow the raceboat. We've been able to pull out over at Metro without any problem traction-wise, but over at Grand Haven we did do a fair amount of slipping (but still got it out anyway).

There have been other times where we slipped a fair amount on the ramps, but we've always managed to get the boat out. That being said, 4wd sure would have been helpful.
