Looking for Tempest info...
Hi,
I'm new on here as I just bought a '86 38' Tempest "Hawk" in real nice condition. Haven't been able to find much information on them except I hear the Hawk was the 1986 APBA Paceboat of the year. I found a site, TempestYachts.com but it disappeared a couple of weeks ago. Any information or ideas of where to find it will sure be appreciated!!! Thanks So Much, Don |
Don: nice boat, could you post some pics? I have been looking for info about the Tempests also and have not come up with much, do a search here on OSO as there were a couple of threads here about them. Friend of mine has a 32' and it is a great rough water boat and has held up very nice over the years...Matt

Beatiful Boat.. However I believe your boat was built by the now defunct Tempest that was on powerboat row .. I believe the owners went to prison for drug smuggling "Sal Magluta and ?? "
Supposedly very well built boats that (again im not sure) used some cig molds ..Someone help me out here :drink: |

Re: Looking for Tempest info...
Hey, I've seen that boat!!! The first picture of it is at a guy's house here in my hometown!! Bonner Springs, KS.!!! Did you buy it on E-Bay? I heard it was on there??
I don't know the guy that had it I just remember seeing it sitting next to his house. Did you put the 540's in it or did he?? It's a very cool looking boat, heck I thought it was a older wellcraft. Good luck!! Where are you going to run it?? |

Re: Looking for Tempest info...
Oh ya Willie Falcon was the other guy .. Magluta got 205 years ..supposedly from 78-91 they brought in 75 tons of bolivian nose candy .. I guess Maglutas kid tried moving some money around a couple years back and is now joining his old man in the hooch..
"Cocaine Cowboys" is a generic term ..not a football team :drink: |
Re: Looking for Tempest info...
Never heard of "thunder row alley" .. :drink:
Lets get picky now :drink: |
Re: Looking for Tempest info...
FunHome. Yes bought it on E-bay after getting my bid in 30 seconds late and his buyer couldn't follow through. He had the 540's but they had half an hour and one had dropped a valve and he wanted big $$$ so told him to keep 'em. Later I bought two 502/415's and ofcourse the NEXT day he calls and gets Real reasonable. The motors were originally built by Lukovick Racing Engines who do a lot of big time NHRA type stuff. I have no idea who built them for my previous owner but they were SCARY when we got into them. Rod bolts had LocTite on them when disassembled!!! Upon reassembly we found out why. Hand snugging rod bolts would stop crank solid from turning!!! Ended up having ALL 16 rods honed .002 to .0024 to get proper clearances and dropped valve was because cams were in at 67* instead of 107*. We did a little cleanup in the Merlin heads as they are pretty rough as cast and obvioulsy checked EVERTHING over real well after what we found. I'm in Wichita not too far from you.
When did the boys go to the big house? Their website was still a year ago. Were they the same ones that had Tempest Yachts since back when??? I am hoping to get it out for a spin in a few weeks but summer has been full of those "life gets in the way of the projects" deals. But I'm back after it now. Thanks for any info and OfCourse for the compliments!!! Don |
Re: Looking for Tempest info...
Nice boat ! WHat drives are on it ?
I would be carefull towing that big boat around with that LITTLE truck ! :D A friend had a 41' tempest with cat diesels and arnesons .He loved it ! |
Re: Looking for Tempest info...
The drives are TRS's but one reason I bought the boat was to try out some drives I'm going to build...... We'll see what happens there...
Little truck is a t*rd. Has a newer 366 crate motor and thinking a 502 Merc would do good if I found one reasonable even needing rebuilt. |
Re: Looking for Tempest info...
Tempest was owned by Dick Simon and Adam Edberg. That 38 hull is the 44 from the style line down, 26 degree bottom. That particular boat was the begining of the end for tempest. It was that boat that Dick Simon was driving with Adam and a rigger on board when they ran over a sea ray bowrider in haulover killing a woman and seriously injuring two others. That was the begining of the tempest/simon/edberg saga....

Re: Looking for Tempest info...
DID WHAT? Was it an accident or drunkiness? What is the story on that?

The woman was sitting in one of the rear engine side jump seats. Heard it was a very grizzly scene. As you said, others on the boat were injured as well. In those days, there were a few very dangerous & busy waterway intersections in the Sunny Isles/Shooters/Oleta River Intracoastal area. Ed

I will look through my archives as I may have some Tempest sales brochures from that era.

If your interested let me know Steve 954-270-5999 I also have a good one with 201 hrs. I'm repowering my boat. |
Is the 44 tempest worth restoring or just too old found one with 3208 cats seems like a good hull?
|
Been looking for one of those for years.
