Ryan,
That was my Phantom, and exactly why I am curious if Bill is the seller of the Scarab. I was foolish enough to buy it from him and do not want to see anyone else make the same mistake.

I would guess someone put the steps in it to maybe make a plug out of it, but first had to build it and see how it would run, when it didn't run like they had hoped, they sold it. This is just my speculation. Otherwise why would they go through so much work for just a couple of M.P.H. and it turn out not to work anyway.

That boat was World champ in 96??
My boat was one of the first out of the same mold, and the Ocean Spray was one of the last untill Larry Smith popped a few hulls recently. On mine, there are 2 pairs of strakes from the front to the engine bay, and the outer pair continues to the stern.
Where is the step relative to the strakes or engine bay bulkhead? Is the step cut across 4 or 2 strakes?
It is posible that the boat handling could be improved by dialing in parameters to work with the step- Xdim, prop rotation (can cause chine walking), balance (boat may have relied on forward ballast tanks), etc.
It definitely would be a cool boat to have. I was also wondering if the step could be partially filled- maybe from the keel to the first set of strakes, where the boat runs at speed????
Good Luck

I have the hull number can I track it down somehow? I don't think it's worth the 30k as a bare hull. It needs
motors, drives, tabs, trans. one driveshaft and exhaust. It would cost around 150k when everything is said and done. and the c-walking may still be there and it's an old boat (sit down too) racing only. Do you agree?

You could buy that ex Ohio Steel Fountain, remove the power and drives to put on the Scarab- then make a big hot-tub out of the Fountain hull-
or just buy the Fountain!
or just buy the Fountain!
