Would you rather have the 99 50ft hustler w/ 1100 cobras and wet sump 6's or 01 50ft Hustler with 575's?

puder 12-24-2003 04:14 PM

575 they'd be a tad more reliable

I personally like the 575's, vs the Cobra power. The other problem is that those drives will eventually have to be changed to #3 or #5 for liveability, too heavy of a boat in the transom end. Also, the resale is approx 80k more with the newer 2001, along with a few updates. To me being reliable is more important than going that extra 25mph, less breakdowns means more poker runs;)

i have a 50 hustler in my shop now that is from the nj area and the owner also has a house here in fl.
the boat has 1200 cobras in it and they just came back from cobra for a complete rebuild.
i know the boat is for sale and is not listed anywhere.

Expo, what year is that 50', can you post pics.:D

If I bought he boat with the Cobras, Joey griffen said he could rebuild the motors naturally aspirated (750hp) for about 25k. He said that this way you should be able to get 300 or so hours out of the motors. Jassman, what do you mean about the drives? Are you talking about the XR's on the 575 boat or the #6's? Expo, what year is the boat you are talking about?

My advice: take 575s with XRs. Cobras may be able to get to 300 hours but with how much minor downtime? You'll be tinkering, adjusting, tuning... all the time. Take stock Merc power and enjoy your poker runs. As for XRs, they will last if used sensibly. It's not the first 50 built with Bravos and there are no more drive problems than on other boats. Besides, with detuned Cobras and #6s, I don't think you'll have much more than 10 mph over a boat with 575s. I just don't think it's worth the trouble. Also keep in mind that boat building is a continuous learning process. A '01 boat will have a number of improvements built in that a '99 boat will not have. Experience and learning from mistakes means that a '01 will surely be a better product which is put together slightly better than a '99 product. This is my opinion but in any case, I believe you will immensely enjoy whichever 50' you decide to take. It is a premium product put together by a very knowledgeable and dedicated people.
