trim tab orientation

what is the difference between mounting the tabs level vs. at an angle with the hull???

Smitty 12-21-2003 09:27 PM

I would think you would want to mount them at an angle that is even with the way the water passes under the hull. I put some K-Planes on mine this past season and the instructions said to mount them on the boat 1/2 inch above the bottom of the running surface parallel to the water flow.

depends on the boat and application. what boat are you doing it on and what for.

Treadwell

some boats like it when you extend the actuall bottom. some boats react better if you extend the strakes. ( more lift )

I think they mean that when the tabs are all the way up, they are completely out of the water.

I beleive it has to do more with the steps added in the
bottoms of boats.
I know a few boats that will
not handle with the tabs mounted in line with the bottom
and must be inline with the
strakes.
IMCO makes a special steering
system for this type of install

the story at has been told that if they are mounted 3 inches under the water the boat should go 3-4 mile per hours faster...

Isn't the above answer only used on April Fools Day???

What about on single engine boats when the tabs are mounted close to the drive instead of being placed in each corner. Also when they are set close to the drive, does this mean they have to be set deeper on the transom?

CustomRigger101 12-22-2003 10:59 AM

reggie fountain started the trim tab mounting even with the water line on the transom.. he told everyone by doing that he could get more speed out of the boat.. i think he started on the 29 Fever.. but i'm getting old.. can't rember **** anymore
