Shop Floor Paint
 

Anyone tried this stuff? I saw it this AM and wondered if ti was any good. I know there are a lot of guys out there that are building shops now and throught this would be a good thing to cover. Every paint I have used to day lifts up or scratches to easy.

Been considering that stuff (or similar). Any experience with it? Does it stay snapped together well? Spaces? Is it real exepensive? (websight had no prices)

The only paints that will hold up reasonably well are the two part epoxy's, forget all of the others. Even the epoxy paints will show wear (dulling), but they are much more resistant to peeling and scratching.

I've used the tiles before in my race car trailer. They are very easy to work with, look incredible (no spaces either), and are very durable. BUT, they are VERY expensive. I can't imagine spending that kind of money to do an entire shop floor.

The epoxy systems are probably the way to go.

Tip: If you use the epoxy, buy the "sprinkles" or colored glitter to throw over the top. It really made my plain grey floor come to life when I added the hunter green flakes to it. Not only does it look much better, but it REALLY hides the dirt. :cool:

I've used Rustoleum 2 part epoxy on two floors, with great results.
They are making it in other colors than grey(which I used the first time), I used a tan the last time and it looks great (still).
Be sure to CLEAN the floor and use the primer first.
It is sooooo nice to clean up oil and fluids with greased lightning and a paper towel.
BTW I get it from Graingers.

Those two are two part epoxy's. One is water based and the other is not. The water based one does claim a lifetime warantee.

If you have had any type of an oil leak or spill on your concrete floor the epoxy will not get a good adheshion it could last for years depending on what type of traffic you will have.

You can contact Hilti Inc 1-800-879-8000 and check on a product called CC 99 single coat 5-6 mils double coat 12-14 mils coverage single coat 250-300 ft' double coat 150-130 ft' per Gal

I remember when I worked for a GM dealership. They had the floor painted. The guys forgot to add grip or sand I guess.The first day it rained we had a car, almost 2 slam into the walls. OUCH! :rolleyes:

Audio-there was a thread on epoxy paints ing GD not too long ago. I posted a link to Tenemic which the industrial strenght stuff. Just remember that prep is the absolute must. Often you'll want to sand blast the floor to get all the grease and oil out of the concrete. I've see the epoxy peal up in large sheets from poor prep.

The race deck is expensive. About $4 - $5 per sq ft.

I ended up using 3 gallons of the the Rustoleum garage floor coating for about $165.

A guy that works for me put that epoxy floor paint from Lowes in his garage and is very happy with it. It's the kind that you broadcast the chips in after rolling it on.

Jon, here is the stuff you really need in your shop, but at $6.50/sq ft(installed), it gets a bit pricey.

Hi Tech Flooring

It's a one step seamless epoxy flooring that is troweled down. It is about 3/16 thick.

I used Tile-Clad it's a two piece epoxy

I've been working on painted floors my whole career in corporate aircraft hangars. Most have been absolute showplaces- they ought to be with the amount of money invested in the aircraft and all the equipment it takes to maintain them.
Epoxies aren't used in this environment; only two-part polyurethanes. Extremely toxic stuff to work with, but holds the shine and resistant to all the potent chemicals (strippers, Skydrol hydraulic fluids, MEK's, toluol and acetones, etc.) and all the equipment such as power carts, jacks, and tool boxes scuffed around on them. Epoxy floors wouldn't stand up to any of this stuff, especially the floor scrubbers that are run around twice a week to keep them looking like a mirror and clean enough to eat off of.
You'd have to etch or shot-peen the floor to apply these paints, but they will last a lifetime if properly maintained.

I thought about using epoxy at my home shop, but I'm going to use polyurethane next spring.

this is my project this weekend , i think i am going to stain then do the urethane on top for the gloss. will post pics when i am done, supposed to be 75 sunday which should be great weather , going to clean and pressure wash saturday and stain on sunday.hope i don't F it up:D :rolleyes: :D :D
