Mercruiser certified

My nephew is now interested in offshore boating, and is a gear head. he was at the new york boat show and was talking to some people about working on boats. all told him he must be mercruiser certified to be taken serious, i also told him that... how can i get this kid down to the school, must be a shortcut. can someone set this kid up while he pays for it. i know nothing about this but im sure some of you guys do, there is no better crowd to ask. so whatever information i can get from you guys would be great. this kid is young and i have never seen him as excited about something.

If I remember correctly he needs to work at a Merc Dealer for a year then take the at home 500 question test before he can even get to go to school....

I may have some paperwork on this... I'll scan it if I do and post it...

I heard they have to be sponsored by a certified Merc tech.

stecz20 12-29-2003 06:48 PM

I believe you have to work for a Merc dealer for a year and pass a test before being allowed to attend the school. I have 3 friends that are starting the school on the 6th in Dallas.

He needs to be sponsored by a Mercury/Mercruiser authorized service dealership or start his own business and go that way. The guidlines are justifiably getting tougher and tougher to go around.

why is it so tough to do? might be a silly question, but man should be able to put your self though the school. anyway, i hope someone can help me out.

where does the kid live at?

Mbam 12-30-2003 06:13 AM

Couple of steps, there is a study at home series of DVD's, then a take at home test. Must work for a dealer who will then enroll him in school. If I remember right there is a 1 week at school basic course, then a year later the certification course.

stecz20,

Check out MMI, Marine Mechanics Institute. I believe it`s in Orlando. I have a friend who graduated from there and he is extremely happy with the education. This kid is now a first class marine mech and I was really impressed at his electrical know how.

With a certification from MMI, most marinas would be happy to hire him and the Merc schools would follow.
