Without the intention to insult anyone...
Silent choice is GAY.
There are some mechanical reasons why you should not have it.
Stock 350 in a 22' Baja? OK. Fine.
540's in a 35' off shore? "Don't be gay sparky. Don't be gay."

That's all I have to say about that.

MIAMIBOYZ 01-06-2004 10:28 AM

TO EACH IT`S OWN:rolleyes:

IT`S NEVER LOUD ENOUGH FOR ME I RUN
DRY ALL DAY LONG:D

HI TIM G. YOU JUST OPENED A CAN OF WHOOP ASS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE SILENT CHOICE:o

H20 Cowgirl 01-06-2004 10:30 AM

I like both loud and silent. It's nice to have the silent when your coming into a marina late at night. But for the most part.......I like the loud.

Steve my old boat was loud all the time and there are times I wished it wasn't my 270 has silent choice that goes through a baffle for a little quieter ride when desired. I say leave it on at least you have the choice then.

Steve_H 01-18-2004 02:10 PM

i decided to leave it on for those no wake zones and late night rides.
i also like the idea of having a "choice".

That may bee true, but if you turn them on as soon as you come off plane you'll probably never get stopped.

C_Spray 02-23-2004 11:01 AM

Keep the Captains Call, just make sure they are the "Normally Open" type. This way, they won't slam shut if something fails, and you can argue that they are not "cut-outs", depending on the laws where you live. ("Cut-outs" are usually defined as a method to bypass the mufflers. If yours are normally open, when you actuate them, the boat gets quieter, and you can make your case.) If your's aren't normally open, Corsa can convert them for you.

we use silent choice made by Corsa on all of our boats here, however there are 2 types of silent choice, most guys worry that at speed the flaps will close and choke the motor, however you can have the option of having the flaps open all the time with the actuator closing them only when you want it closed!! those are the ones we use, however alot of people have the other one that is normally closed, using the acutator to hold them open. We dont have alot of areas here to idle, or near restaurants etc, big lakes, big ocean, so we have ours open for the most part, but very nice to be able to run the silent when coming into a harbour etc, but this way if the actuator fails, it stays OPEN not closed, so it wont choke the motor

Full Time Legal Exhaust Systems

QUICK & QUIET™ CORSA’s non-restrictive mufflers and silencers were developed for boats equipped with thru-hull, full-time open exhaust systems. They are the ideal solution for removing the harsh noise while retaining a distinctive rumble and maximum performance. Quick & Quiet™ systems include two patented transom-mounted ASR Silencer Tips and two ASR interior mufflers with a balance tube and are designed to retrofit existing full-time, thru-hull applications.

I have this brand for sale in the parts section
and you DONT HAVE to wire them open
they are the PERFORMANCE series
Open on start, you have to engage them
to quiet the boat, all the other types
are closed when you start the boat
much better choice for a 500hp and up

dont know if theyre normally open or closed yet.

hopefully we'll get lots of picks of the trip and post em here.

They do limit how far you can go with the engine due to the short risers and early water discharge. BUT, they are the greatest when you are trying to sneak in or out of anyplace in the wee hrs. Or, getting by the police without drawing too much attention.

marinetrans 02-23-2004 08:18 PM

Spice up some sailboater's lives w/ some Stainless Marine Gen3 5". Its their favorite exhaust.:D

SOX 02-23-2004 11:46 PM

I always like options. Keep 'em! :frog:

Fightclub 02-24-2004 03:57 AM

I dont have the option but would like to. Long no wake get's old after a while.

Plus coming in around 2:00 AM to the dock   You get more attention than you want sometimes.

Frequency 02-25-2004 09:01 AM

Here's a question for those with experience:

What is quieter at idle, muffled exhaust or running silent choice on?

C_Spray 02-26-2004 08:19 AM

Captains Call/Silent Choice by a mile. All you hear is a little "woofa-woofa-woofa" sound with a little rattle from the valves.

As Elmer Fudd says: "Be vewy, vewy kwiyut..."

Also makes for A LOT less shouting and frayed tempers around the docks. (You married guys know what i mean.)

LostinBoston 04-13-2004 07:08 PM

Personally i like it loud when im driving. When im hung over on sat or sun mornin and some guy from across the canal from me decides to go on an 8 am run and does not have silent choice or another muffler, im not happy. It can also get annoying at restaurants. Of course when im driving, the louder the better, my family doesnt agree though so my next boat will have some sort of silencer.

ALL MY BUDDIES HAVE BEEN TICKETED OR STOPPED AND WARNED /CHECKED INTHIER BOATS ON LOTO.
I HAVE SILENT CHOICE ON MY 42 LIGHTNING AND USE IT A LOT WHEN WE VISIT LOTO AND I HAVE NEVER EVEN GOT AS MUCH AS A SECOND LOOK FROM MISSOURI FIVE -O.
DON'T GET RID OF SOMETHING THAT COULD BE YOUR BEST BUD ON LOTO
ANY ONE WHO THINKS YOU SHOULD DITCH THEM HAS NOT SPENT MUCH TIME BOATING ON LOTO

Leave the engines out and put sails on it.D :D :D

I personally like 160 DB from dry headers. My earplugs are rated -29 DB, so one of the safety guys at work told me I will go deaf after about 200 hours of running. I won't be able to hear my wife complain about all the money I'm spending on 2 blower setups or some other essentials...

Seriously, any time you expose your ears to any noise that makes them ring, you have done damage to your hearing. They may recover, and they may not. A coworker went to a NASCAR race without earplugs and now has Tinnitus (sp?) which is a permanent ringing in his ears. I believe 85 DB is the starting point at which prolonged exposure can cause problems.

Medical studies have shown that it isn't so much prolonged loud noise (road traffic,,, compressors,,, machinery)as it is a percussive noise..(gun shots... jackhammers.. air hammers.. hammers striking metal etc)..that causes hearing loss. The small hairs inside the inner ear ( not the big hairs I have growing on the outside,, being an old man)... these small hairs that detect sound tend to bend over and lay down in a attempt to protect themselves during long loud noises... but when they are struck by a loud percussion... they are sheared off and don't re-grow... hence .. hearing loss... Wind noise will give you some temporary hearing loss... but loud exhaust will cause permanent loss... sorry for the bad news... but I've lost some hearing in my left ear from rifle and shotgun blasts while hunting in my redneck past....

h2owarrior 04-14-2004 08:52 PM

Keep it. It never hurts to be couteous when near people who don't appreciate the sound of a highly strung V-8 like we do:D :D

Reckless32 04-15-2004 09:55 AM

I haven't read thru all of the 70+ posts, but I'm sure I can guess the mixed responses. I used to be a nay-sayer on the silencer option but now that I've had it in my last two boats I wouldn't now go very long without. As someone said as I skimmed thru, after running hard across the bay for a period of time your ears are ringing a bit. It's nice to tone it down a bit. Plus upon making a powerboat entry into any channel/harbor it's nice to be able to quickly quiet yourself down so "Smokey-the-Duck" will take his eye off you as you go by. Also those late nights trolling down the canal towards home (especially for those of us livin on the water) so the neighbors can't tell if it's you or one of those constant flows of fishing boats coming & going. Finally it is nice around the restaurant/bar docks when entering a tight spot or leaving to better be able to communicate with whomever you have onboard helping with the line handling. Then as you're clear pop it on to impress the gawkers. THE best reason is that it makes the wife happy when in the no-wake zones and she's lying on the sunpad and wanting to listen to the stereo/CD while I talk on the FRS with my buddies in their boats with THEIR wives/girlfriends doin' the same thing....;)

Reckless32 04-15-2004 09:58 AM

FunHome 04-15-2004 01:34 PM

I have been trying to decide if I wanted to keep mine....I just got done putting on new Revolution Marine Exhaust and at first I was going to take it off. But then again here is how I look at it....

If when leaving anywhere at LOTO at night and your in a flashy and Loud boat you will draw the attention of the Water Patrol more than a boat that is Quiet.

Also, Like you, it's not a big deal to me. But, when we go to sell the boats it might be a option that is important to the buyer.

I'm trying to keep mine. I've had to do some modification's but I think I can get it to fit back on!!

rainman 04-15-2004 02:36 PM

LOUD

Sick Stinger 03-14-2008 12:14 PM

Loud gets it for me. I want you know i was there i am coming there or i am around there. Plus the raw sounds is cool and i just personaly like it
