Southeastern Coastal Usa

 Hi to all,
My wife and I have a dilemma. We want to move from the cold of Pennsylvania to an area from the Outer Banks, NC to Florida. Since we can't visit every area ourselves I thought I'd ask if any of you could give us some ideas. We would like to be very close to the ocean ( 30 minutes max. - prefer closer ). The property could be on a river, lake, etc. that gets me to the Atlantic or Gulf. It could be in a development or just an acre or less in a rural area. Obviously, must be deep enough for my 292 Formula. I'd love to be somewhere that has at minimums 10 months of boating. Longer would be great!
Thanks,
Rick

I'm considering that area around Oriental/New Bern, North Carolina. Haven't been there personally, but plan to soon...

goldenruhl 01-08-2004 03:49 PM

Hi,
About 6 miles from Oriental there is a gorgeous development on Dawson's Creek called Shine Landing. My wife and I had looked there but the timing wasn't right. Definitely check it out. I think it's called Coastal properties and the office in in New Bern. Beautiful town. You would be located about very close to the Neuse river, ICW, and 30 minutes from Pamlico sound! If timing would have been right we'd have definitely purchased. Check with Duncan Harrison - GREAT GUY. They run ads in Powerboat Mag. Anyway, I'm not sure it stays as warm as I want it to. Locals say it can be 35 in the winter mornings and get up to 65 - 70 in the afternoon. Not sure if that is what I want, so I have to look more.
Thanks anyway,
Rick

I would suspect anything north of the Fla/Ga line your not going to get 10 months of boating. Ever consider a location on the Gulf Coast. Destin, Fl; Pensacola, Fl; and Orange Beach, Al are great areas with 9 - 10 mos of boating and great fast boat scenes.

WE just the made the trip looking at property all up the east coast from the Keys to the Virginia/NC border. There are alot of nice places. I really like Wilmington NC. S/E Georgia was second. St. Marys Georgia was a really nice small town with access to the ocean. If you want I can tell you all about our search as it sounds like were looking for the same thing. We covered 5K miles. Shoot me an email and Ill send you a number where you can contact me.

Rick - Interesting to hear your comments about Shine Landing. Turns out that was one of the first ones I looked at seriously (on line) when I started searching. I did hear from someone else that mosquitos can be a problem in that area, though. I like the fact that you can run the ICW canal to Morehead City/Beaufort and the coast.

Chris - You will hear from me in the near future.

Carolinas are very nice.
But I'd personally recommend Palm Beach County FL.
South of PB is nice, but it's crowded here...

What do you and the wife do for a living?? That will partially dictate.

Lot's of PA people here.
We're from Southampton. Moved here a almost two years ago, and I never think about moving back. F-PA.

Ambrose is down here this weekend visiting and boating... He's from Doylestown.
Steve Fox was here for two weeks with his boat. He's from Elverson/Malvern.

Yes, it's nice here. East coast preferrably, but the west coast has dome advantages.

This pic is in Sarasota, new years day boating... Good enough for you?

Hi Tim,
Thanks for the info. We live in Williamsport and both will be retired - wife has 1 more year in the school system here. Both of us are 52.
Again thanks,
Rick

Goldenruhl. I am on a similar quest. Trying to escape the crappy job market and social market of Pittsburgh. This place has gone down hill fast. But I am definately looking in Florida only. In fact, getting on the road today. Next time on I will be in Florida. Good luck to you and the Mrs on your quest.

Tim, I didnt know you were originally from Pa. Hopefully I'll get a chance to run into you while down there. Will definately be at Miami for the show.

Tim G is that pic at the MAr Vista PUB in post 7? Man love that atmosphere there.

Rollwithit where abouts are you looking at? Have some really good friends that are realators in the Bradenton Sarasota are that are boaters. If on that side look up Sara Bay Reallty there. good luck

Tim G, Great picture! People relaxing with powerboats in the background. Don't get no better than that.

Check out Barefoot Landing in Myrtle Beach, So. Carolina, Houses & condo's back up to I.C.W., & beach is a mile away. Plenty of condo's & land sites. Ask for Jay Springs at BarefootLanding Realty.

C_Spray 01-23-2004 12:43 PM

Lots of good suggestions here - thanks, everybody. While Myrtle Beach is nice, I'm looking for lots of room to roam: this is going to be a retirement house. Having a chioce of only either "the ditch" (ICW) or the open ocean isn't enough. I'm looking for lots of Bay and estuary waters. Anyone who has spent some time exploring Cheaspeake Bay will understand that one. I'm also looking for at least one or two acres. I'm not the type to live 20' from my next door neighbor's house.
My wife's relatives are in NJ, so we don't want to get more than a day's drive (500 miles) away from them.

Not asking for much, huh?

goldenruhl 01-23-2004 12:49 PM

Hi C_Spray,
I'm a little different. I want an acre or less. I don't want a part time job cutting grass! LOL. We just want decent water, hopefully with ICW access.
Rick

Mr. Demeanour - Did you get my email?

We're headed down this Thursday evening (29th) to spend Friday and Saturday kicking around New Bern/Oriental. If any has any realtors or contacts to recommend, let me know....

Rick - Who said anything about grass? I just want some space. Like this:

goldenruhl 01-27-2004 03:17 PM

Hello Mr. C_Spray!
Arapohoe, NC - 6 miles from Oriental. The development is Shine Landing. Coastal Marketing & Development CO. out of New Bern.
Talk to Duncan Harrison @ 800 566 5263. They have 4 other waterfront developments in the area. Good luck and say hi to Duncan for us! Please let me know how it goes.
Rick
