Who's On a Diet

OK, I keep seeing all these food threads on who eats what. I was just wondering does any one's New Year's resolutions involve going on a diet?

mikev 01-09-2004 01:43 PM

I was going to do all that resolution crap. Then realized, why bother? If I died now, worrying about some far off goal I will never accomplish, well I wouldnt accomplish it. Live for the moment.

Edit- Dont say "you wish you would have been healthier when you are 80 and sick"

Here is my response. I knew someone who quit smoking once. He went around, told everyone he added a long time on to his life, about a month later he died in a car accident.

X-Rated30 01-09-2004 02:47 PM

No formal diet, just trying to cut back on the fat. (Shooting for 10g per day.) This is in prep for getting back to the gym. I will start back in the next week or so.

(How many times have I said that! )

Pointerman 01-09-2004 02:52 PM

I just downed an entire Toblerone bar. I should be on a diet, but I'm waiting for all the candy from Christmas to be consumed before I even think about it. No sense wasting perfectly good chocolate.

dollerchick 01-09-2004 03:04 PM

I will be on my way to Disney to run the Marathon on Sunday...No "Diet" for me..., I am eating everything in sight!!!!

robyw1 01-09-2004 03:28 PM

I have been on a strict diet & exercise with no alcohol since Christmas. it is working too I can't believe it.

MnFastBoat 01-09-2004 09:57 PM

Yes I am
Been doing very well on it too.
But then again some say my diet is a little extreme.
But I feel better then I have in the last 5 years :)
And that matters the most.
You only have one life, even if my name is Morris I have found I am excluded from the nine lives :(
been taught a few life lessons and finally chose to do something about it.

robyw1 01-09-2004 10:36 PM

You definitely do feel better also. I have been obese 6'2" 265-lbs. I have lost 11 pounds since Thanksgiving and I can't tell you how much more alive you feel even with that little weight loss. I'm trying to get down to 180/190. I got a ways to go and it isn't easy. But trust me being fat sucks. It affects your everyday life, makes you worn out just by doing normal daily task. I believe that you must be active with daily exercise or no diet will work. Trust me, no matter how hard it is for you to do it, make the time to lose weight if you need to. If you need to wire your jaw shut then do it.

I stopped dieting.... made a lifestyle change about ten years ago. .. gave up fat.... gave up dairy.....gave up beer and pizza (*sniff* I really miss the pizza).... gave up alcohol... started riding my bicycle 50 miles a week and lost 50 lbs.... never looked back.... People ask me what is the hardest part of my bike ride.... I reply.... the half hour before I go... putting on my bike shoes and spandex pants... Rode 15 miles today.... but It's 75 degrees here in Los Angeles! :D :D :D :D :p

Engaged in competitive gorge eating over the holidays (october 25 thru jan 7).

Started the Atkins "startup phase" Wednesday, but wife covered the fridge with half eaten Chinese food boxes and I folded. Also, new neighbors (we are the new neighbors, but the existing ones across thestreet) brought a cake of some sort. Couldn't pass it up.

Monday will be the next restart. My feet are hurting. Gotta lose some mass.

Be true to yourself and really try to make the LOW CARB work. You can call it a diet if you want but I'm never hungry and eat all the time. The difference is now I pay more attention to what is in different products. I never looked at a nutrition label before but it really opened my eyes to what can make this work or fail.
I loosely follow the Adkins plan and used it to get started on the first two week "induction" where you try and rid your body of the excess carbs. You can go to their website to find out about it and what foods you should eat during this time.

After that I just really try and watch what foods are low in carbs. Many of the regular stores are starting to carry more products along with the specialty places. I hate paying the higher prices but if thats what it takes I'm willing to do it.
Drink more water.
Give up regular pop. Instead drink products made with SPLENDA. Diet Rite makes a bunch of flavored kinds. Crystal lite puts it in the kind thats ready to drink but not the powdered kind.
You can drink other diet pops, Coke,Pepsi ect. but they are made with Nutra Sweet (possibly bad for you) and they say that it has hindered some peoples weight loss on the low carb. I do occasionally have a can of it.
I like Beer :D I gave up Bud Light for Michalob Ultra.
If you like mixed drinks try the Vodka with the flavored diet pop. A lot of the alcohols have no carbs but the down side is that the alcohol burns before the fat so it will slow your progress.
You can still eat out at fast food places but just change a little. Get the big burger or two and toss away the bun. Sorry no fries any more:( .

Staying away from pasta was a killer for me. they have alternative items.
No bread at first. Then they have kinds that you can eat but you have to be conscious of how many carbs are in a slice.
If you need Milk get the Atkins kind. I add a little water to it and it taste more like 2%.

They have all kinds of Candy bars and snacks that are made with different items then are in traditional ones.
Some of this taste great.

The more you get into it you will see that certain items in food cancel other things out to make NET Carbs.
For an example I have A Adkins Advantage Chocolate Peanut Butter Bar in front of me.
It says Total Carbs.21g
You get to subtract the Fiber 10g and Glycerin 9g which both have a minimal impact on blood sugar leaving you with a net carb of 2grams.

I went through all of the holiday parties and I ate plenty and drank even more. I had all of the goodies that I have been cutting out of my intake but I did it in moderation and kept with my eating habits at other meals. Yes sometimes if i really have to have something I go ahead and do it because if not it's all that I think about.

Good luck no matter what you do.

I decided last June "enough was enough". I've gone from 248 to 197. The first two weeks were the hardest. I watch carbs, basically gave up alcohol back in Nov. 96 (though I will have a beer or two occasionally), and eat about one and a half meals a day. I certainly feel better. Working so much I'd become dependent on fast food, the kiss of death. (no offense Fred). Have not been through a "drive through" in six months. I want to get to around 190 and stay there. As I get older, I will adjust weight accordingly. Fat people do not live long lives.
