AMT Cat Performance

I have been looking at the 30' AMT Cat on sale by Suncoast, and other than liking the lines of the boat I really don't know anything about them.

How do they compare to Skater, Spectre, Eliminator?

Quality, Ride, Etc.

Thanks.

I also have looked at them before. I love the lines. Only thing that I couldn't deal with is NO rub rail. The way I'm always docked n tied up. I can see it getting trashed. I wonder if they make them with rub rails?

Very nice, high quality boats. My second choice behind Skater. I'd take a Skater for the resale value, but the AMT is equally nice. I personally like the looks of the AMT the best. Remember, until now you couldn't buy a 30' Skater. I like the 30 AMT over the 28 Skater, but the 32 Skater (either one) over any other 28-30 cat. Of the boats listed I'd rank them in this order:

Skater
AMT
Spectre
Eliminator

BTY... you could add the rub-rail on the AMT if you so desired.

How is the freeboard on the AMT?
Does it sit lower in the water than the Skater?
Is there any sort of cabin under the dash or is it unfinished?

About the same for the first two questions... I don't recall on the cabin. I'll take a guess and say that the AMT just has some storage space under the dash, I don't think there's a finished cabin.?.?.?

There is NOT a finished cabin under the dash. West Coast Custom and Rigging in Cali did theres with a pad under the dash for a place to get out of the weather so it is an option. The boat has pretty high free board and you definatley feel snug in the bolsters. This hull has been the National champion in stock class for the last 3 or 4 years. The bottom was tooled on a CNC milling machine so it is very straight. There has only been OB versions built but an IO version is in the future. With OB all of the boats run righ around 100. The last one that was built wit PRO MAX 225's run in the high 90's. They would rather not build one with a rub rail as it really takes away from the design. If you are intrested in a new boat give me a call. 941-758-3303

Don't forget the 32 AMT ,

I drove a 30 in a poker run last year..or maybe the year before. The boat handled great , although it was really flat that day we did manage to find a few big wakes to launch it from . Flew nice and level with a smoth re-entry. I also watched one on the race couse all year..Impressive boat. The only thing I did not like was seeing the back end of it all year...hope to get in another one one day...

I didn't know they made a 32. Do tell...

This is I think the 32' your are refering to. I am not absolutely sure if it is an AMT or not. I do know that it was designed by Doug Write and raced by Gary Ballough. I am sure Ryan Beckley can add to what I have stated and also correct me where I am wrong.

Yep that would be it ........not sure of the stats and such Ryan will chime in I'm sure.

It's not an AMT same creator with some changes, I believe the it's like 12" longer and a bit wider too. A few more sters in the bottom and a different canopy. All cnc tooled hull and deck as the AMT. Repotedly pretty light weight too. Hey Nasty are you thinking of getting an AMT?

Powerboat did a review within the last two issues. I think it would be worth while to read it.

Ryan Beckley 01-13-2004 11:47 PM

Hotboat did a test on the west coast boat . It is rigged with 300x's, small lay down cabin, big stereo, it had some handling issuse on the test day by the testers. Reporteldy run 103 on a normal day.
The Doug Wright boat is only available as a race / canopy boat so far and a hull and deck starts at $85,000.00

Rik 01-14-2004 01:10 AM

I think they are going to be making a 32' with inboard power some time soon.

magnuman 01-14-2004 12:22 PM

Thanks for the info.
I really like the looks of the boat.
Now if I can just sell my Magnum.....

Andy Trauth who i believe is one of the owners of AMT had one down at shooter shootout couple years ago. what a awsome ride. after the time trials on Saturday and all the boats were heading home he took me out for a ride. this was the first time i was every in a cat and i was flabbergasted to say the least at how it handled the huge sloppy waters. we were running in the 80-90mph range and it ws just dancing over the water like skipping a rock. actually the one at suncoast i believe is the same boat. needless to say when we got back i was grinning ear to ear. the glass work was truely remarkable and the seams were they glass the top and bottom together was near flawless.

so...what about the handling issues?

Ryan Beckley 01-14-2004 07:49 PM

that boat is not set up properly, the AMT race hull is 4 years running national champion. Show me a true tunnel cat that lope/porpoise.
