Garmin 182C
1 Attachment(s)
I'm going to add this chartplotter on my boat this spring and was wondering if anyone has ever used the model with the internal antenna. I called Garmin and they say no problem:rolleyes: Just wanted to check for real experience. It'll be great if I don't have to use it!
Here is a pic of my current Helm layout. |

I'm going to replace the compass with the unit (flush mounted)
Here is a pic that I found with a similar setup. Thanks in advance!, Craig |
I immediately replaced the black & white one with the 182C. Best thing I've ever done. You can read it at any speed. It loads much faster than the standard black & white one.
|
Do you have the internal antenna or the external one?
|
Its the external little "dome" on the deck. I do have my XM Satelite antenna internally mounted though. It works but every once in awhile it loses reception.
|
Craig,
Can you buy the 182c in white? Or was the one in your photo painted. I kind of like the white! I am interested in purchasing one this winter as well. PS: I am a fellow Bullet owner, I remember seeing your boat at LOTO - Looked Great! |
No, it does not come in white.:( The one in the photo is of Totalmp's Bullet, I'm not sure if they painted it or what model it is.
Thanks on the Bullet, I just bought it in Sept. and we love it!!! Post some pics of yours!!! |
I wish they would do white. They get hot as hell in the sun. The digital display can "black out" if it gets too hot. I throw a towel over mine when we aren't running.
|
My friend has an avionics shop in FL and rigged his antenna in the cabbin out of site. works great and hes running the garmin i think a 1006 color. No trouble at all if you have to mount it try tucking it inside.

Originally posted by phastang Craig-I've been on TMP's Bullet several times. They took the GPS apart and painted it, but because of the way they did it, you would swear it came like that from Garmin. Your boat is bad ass by the way! Gotta love a nice Bullet! I think you might have to put a couple more gauges over on the left side.........perhaps BOOST and FUEL PRESS???????? |
We don't need no stinking drive temp!!!!!! We Need BBBOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSTTTTT.:D You will thank me later. I rode in TMP's boat with 850SC's and all I could say was.....Holy Chit! the wind was sucking my cocktail right out of its cup!:D

Hey Craig,
I sell alot of those units at my parttime job. And the customers are real happy about them. Let me know if you need a price or anything like that on it. Bobby |

Craig, I have been using a Garmin 182 (not color) for about 3 seasons. The internal antenna works fine. I have it mounted to the left side of the dash with a Ram Mount.
|
Will the 182C with internal antenna
interface with a Nordskog GPS speedo? |

Originally posted by StrikinLightnin Will the 182C with internal antenna interface with a Nordskog GPS speedo? Craig, the RAM is a stand type mount, not for in dash. I would think the 182 would be easy to build in since it is fairly small. Scott has been using one for a while and he loves that thing. His works well on the dash with the internal antenna and he has all that windshield, bimini frame, etc. |
Hey guys, I am in the market for a new gps. I don't have room for an in-dash setup. What would you recommend? Also, can it work off my gps speedo antenna??

I use a streetpilotIII for driving and the Garmin V for the boat takes bluecharts but is hard to read compared to the 182c

How about a 182C mounted on the right side on a bracket?
|
I want to keep the dash clean. I was thinking of going with a hand held 176 and resting it on the right side above the stereo remote.
|
One of the guys at my marina mounted a 182 with the internal antenna on the dash of his Black Thunder and loves it. Easy install, and worked right away, first time. Garmin's software and controls are pretty easy to use. (Important for those who don't believe in owners manuals, or even quickstart guides. Like men.) Like Ted said, any speedo or other device that will take an NMEA 0183 input can share the signal.
I went with the 2010C - the GPS equivalent of a wide-screen TV. That thing is no less than a-w-e-s-o-m-e. I made a plexiglas housing and mounted it over the cabin door on the dash of my 382. (Sorry - no pictures right now.) |
GARMIN MAP-188C
get a sounder too :D |
Macklin,
I don't have a pic, but I also did not want to mod the dash. I lifed my compass out, and ran the power wire to my Garmin Handheld down to my power panel. I then re-installed the compass, and left the power cable through the hole, and out the back. I took some very pliable bathroom grade white silicone and sealed the lift at the rear of the compass bezel. WestMarine has a 3M product which is basically a sticky-back plastic velco. It is VERY sturdy, and holds the base mount for my handheld GPS on the top of my dash in my Sonic. It all looks very clean. My handheld is completely removable; including the bracket, and I have kept everything original and intact on my dash. It works very well. I think you could do the same with either lifting the edge of your dash panel, or removing a screw, and inserting your power wire though that hole, and silicone it back sealed. When/if I want to go back to original, I just need to remove that little bit of silicone, and pull out my hard-wire powercord. The sticky-back velco will come off with a little WD-40. You definately want to have a DC cord powered GPS, because if you rely on your battery handheld, I guarantee the time it dies on you, is dead of night, with no fricking moon. |
internal antenna
I have a 182C in my 38 Top Gun with the antenna mounted in the forward compartment(the other side of the "cigarette" mirror). No problems. Works great.
Going to install an antenna in the cat as well and use the same GPS. The 182C is the best I have seen. I have two Garmin GPS's in my plane. Hard to believe we used to fly without them. |
Originally posted by craig223 Thanks for the 411:) What is a Ram mount? They say that there is no flush/recessed mount kit available so I was planning on fabricating one. Do you have any pics of your setup? |
I have a 182C with an external antenna. use a RAM mounting arm that swivels. Works great. The internal antenna gave fine reception but did not work with the swivel mount.

New 196
Garmin has just released the new 196 (portable). Is not color as the 182C but has Land, Sea and Air capabilities(snowmobile as well).
6 AA's or cigarette lighter cpability. |
A BIG thanks to everyone for their input!!:) I'm going to go with the Garmin 182C and mount it in-dash (in place of the compass) The best price that I have gotten is $864.50 (total inc. tax & shipping) from gpsdiscount.com. Bobbyb works @WestMarine and is going to see if his boss will match it! (thanks) I will get it from him if that's the case!
One other thing:This COLD weather SUCKS!!!!!:hothead: :hothead: |
Try Mountain Laurel Products ([email protected]) and save $25 compared to GPSDiscount. They've got the 182C on eBay for $845, but you can "negotiate."
|
Actually Craig, I work at Boaters World. I am sorry i havent gotten back to you my boss has been in meetings the last 2 days.
|
Check Boatfix.com they usually have good prices on Garmin. I have dealt with GPSdiscount.com and they have great service, same day shipping.

Originally posted by Macklin I want to keep the dash clean. I was thinking of going with a hand held 176 and resting it on the right side above the stereo remote. Heres my buddy Karls 380 PQ Avenger. We custom made a swing away braket for his Raytheon Radar/GPS system. He can swing it out of the way to get in and out of the drivers seat and it can swing out and lock in 3 different positions. One being so the pass can see and navigate if need be. :D |

Craig - Not to torpedo BobbyB, but if you call the West Marine/BoatUS order and refer the operator to the appropriate web page on GPSDiscount, they will match any price. I got almost $500 off on my Garmin 2010C package that way....

Here is a picture of my 182c internal antenna. I've only had it for a short time but I love it. You can't beat the blue chart chip for accuracy. I know the picture shows that we are right in the middle of land, but that was before we got the blue chart chips.
