NEED ADVICE Fish Boat... Cat or V

Looking for a fishing boat, what do you guys know about WWW.Worldclasscats.com www.tritonboats.com , I checked them out seem real good, in my local area for service, but Im not as knowledgable as some of you guys and need advice. The boat will be used primarily as a fish but mostly family weekend excursions, dont want to use the Nortech every weekend, the boat will be replacing my 2003 Sea-Doo 22' Islandia deck boat, need something more stable to reach the islands, Thanks everyone, Jeff

i looked at those world class cats in bay st louis, nice layout and 2 big 4 stokes, get there quick. thought you have to go out real far to get to deep water fishing or are you talking the chanduelir island chain???

SS930 01-20-2004 08:00 AM

Both are great boats. I fished off a 32' WC last summer. I can't say enough nice things about that boat!

Try not to confuse these cats to offshore racing cats... Offshore racing style cats use the tunnel to pack air and lift the boat out of the water to increase speed. While the tunnel in these fishing boats will do the same thing at a high enough speed, they never really reap the benefits of the lift because they don't get going fast enough. Instead, the layout of the cat is used more for its rough water handling, wide beam (space and stability), and large open deck. They are not luxury boats, but rather task oriented and very function fishing boats. If you have the coin for one of these I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Jassman 01-20-2004 08:14 AM

Open72, yes, that was the same dealer, I bought my Ford from Charlie Henderson next door, and he also owns the boat dealership, he's a real straight shooter. The Seadoo on a rough day isnt task oriented for the job, its more of a river runner, and now I have to alieviate more stress (doctors orders) I have to get another hobby, and Chandelier is where we want to go, along with all the islands, Cat Island and Ship Island. Join us anytime you want, bring your boat down or ride with us, Ive got a Nortech also, would like to meet you guys. Thanks Jeff

SS930, thanks for the info, Im looking at the 250, or 270 suv, all around for some fishing and family oriented. The info on the ride is what Im concerned about, speed isnt that important, 45-60mph would make me happy, thanks Jeff

Strange But Good

I was on a ( 25or27 ?) WC last summer. Amazing ride in a 2' chop, very stable a good safe platform to fish or swim off of. The two big Hondas ran exactly as you would expect almost electric in operation. The thing is more of an appliance than a boat, slower than it should have been ( maybe 42- 45mph) and strange when you turned it, except around the dock where it rules. My opinion, its low on fun ( compared to a similar size and powered mono hull) but very high on utility. I don't know what happens when it gets really rough and the tunnel starts to slap, but it does run well at low speeds so you can probably always chug home regardless. You really need to run one they're that different. They have none of the characteristics of a air entrapment cat except turning, the thing never really gets on plane, it just picks up speed, kinda weird but it works.

I have a buddy that had a Glacier Bay 26 something.. It is very similar to the WC. Very nice boat but I never went out on it with really rough seas. I am with WickedWon.. It is very high on utility so to take the family out to the islands it should be a sure bet. Don't think the fun factor really matters when you have a Nortech as your primary boat.. The only thing is you might miss the Nortech when you are out there. Always happens to me.. When I don't take my boat out and take my dad's fishing boat, I spot a potential race contender and wish I had my boat.. :D WC I think is your best bet. Just my 2 cents..

JEFF, WHY EVEN BOTHER, YOU CAN CHARTER BOATS ALL ALONG THE COAST, LESS HEADACHES,NO TOWING , JUST SHOW UP , GO FISH , COME BACK , MOST OUT THERE WILL CLEAN THE CATCH, IN THE BOX , BACK TO DIAMOND HEAD. NO CLEANING , MAINTENANCE, ETC. FRYING THE CATCH BY 3 IN THE AFTERNOON. LESS STRRESSS..........

Hi Jeff,

This is the line drawing of the new 36' Pantera Survivor "twin stepped" C.C. "Fish" that we will be offering this Summer.

We will power this new model with twin or triple outboards or I/Os.

You will be the first to your fishing destination.:p

We will also be offering this C.C. in a few different configurations including the S.U.B. version which will include 6 stand up bolsters ( 2 rows of three ), a forward cabin and a wide open deck. The S.U.B. model is a cross between a C.C. and a sport boat.

Jo - Very slick. I like the extra forward seating idea. Alas, new is out of my budget but I'll sure look forward to seeing it.

Hey Jo... Nice machine. I would want it w/o the bowrail but the design looks very nice..

JO - PANTERABOATS 01-20-2004 01:00 PM

The standard C.C. version and the S.U.B. model will have an approximate 10 ft. cabin area.

The C.C. designed for " fishing " will not have a cabin area. The bow rail is on this design sketch for a true fisherman that we may be building one custom made shortly.

This C.C. model is going to be built to take Big Water abuse .We are going to build each one with a full hand laid race lamination and put the best parts on them for rough water abuse.

I like to try and power one with a pair of 525 EFIs :) just to play around with ( no fishing for me ).I don't even eat fish.
:fish:

The S.U.B. model ( sport utility boat ) is going to be a real unique set up. It will be a one of a kind concept with very innovative features.

The World Cats are really nice. My neighbor has a 23 Center console and a 27 express cabin. The guy next door to hime has the 27 SF. They may not be the fastest boats around but they make a great fishing platform. With the 225 Hondas you can run them all week on a tank of gas. If you're looking to go fishing this is the way to go, just don't expect to be pushing 60 mph in them.

puder 01-20-2004 03:11 PM

i heard superboat will be biulding a center console 30' and 34'

if you want a good stable fast boat for not much $$$ that is the way to go. ANd seeing as its afishboat and the cabin is used as storage the lack of cabin frills won;t be an issue

Open 72,

I am a meat and potato kind of guy.I have never tried Seafood in my entire life.

This is our new 36' "twin Stepped" Pantera Survivor hull bottom the C.C. version will be based on. It runs strong in flat and rough water.

Open 72 , chartering is great, but have to replace the SeaDoo Islandia for a every other day boat, for island hopping and going up the Jordan and Wolf rivers. We beach alot with usually 4-10 people and or kids. Plus then Ive got something a lttle larger to clean, which is also relaxing.;)

Jo and Pepe, awesome looking boat, love the lines, and I know the build quality will be awesome, but... I know as much as I want it , it will be out of my price range. Looking for 24-30' 50k-100k. thanks and good luck, Ill check it out at the Maimi show.:D

The 2000 Pantera C.C. I had listed for sale here on OSO will be going to Ct. in the next couple of weeks to a new owner. This 28' C.C. would of worked good for you.It was in great condition.

Stop by and say hi while in Miami. We are located 15-20 minutes from the show.

Good luck in your search.Look in the South Florida Boat Trader.

Thanks Jo, Sandy and I will stop by.

Frequentflyer, I checked out the GlacierBay, also nice but the WC is 10 miles away and build quality is a trade off, but about 10k more. And I could be wrong but from all the specs they seem about 5 mph slower, appreciate the help.

Wickedwon, the 27 WC I was on was very smooth in 2' water, I was pleased, just when you wish you had some big water for testing that day, it always happens to be the nicest day of the week. Ive lowered my expectations on speed,:( 45-55mph will be ok, and those Honda's are extremely effecient, thanks for the help, Jeff:D

the jordan river is a pain in the ass, usually go check out the fireworks behind the majic on the 4th. sandbar on the wolf is cool, have a friend with a house right inside of the bay in timber ridge. running seadoos up the wolf til' you can't go anymore, that's a blast. i would like to go out to the islands 1 year and stay on the
m/v "i'm alone ".

Looks like a sweet boat Jo, how about running that 28 CC in P class this year.

We work with a lot of tournament fishermen who travel sometimes 250 miles a day in the Gulf and Atlantic. They all use V bottom boats with 2 or 3 outboards. As far as they are concerned "in rough water, we go out when the cats are coming in". I personally am not an offshore fisherman but in big water, 6'-8', our fisherman customers all swear by V bottom boats.

SS930 01-21-2004 07:04 AM

I can tell you the 32' WC is great in good size water. I haven't been in the 27' so I cant comment on it. I have seen the two side by side... the 32' is much larger all around. If traveling in really big water is your concern, you might want to go with the vee, but you'll find the cat much more stable while at rest because of it's large beam.

I love the looks of many of todays sporty cc's, but the biggest problem I have with them is most are unstable while the boat is at rest. While fishing in rougher water you really get tossed around in these sporty vee's, not to mention once everyone goes to one side when a fish is on... the things feel like they are ready to roll over! They look sweet, go like hell, but I'll take a nice stable platform for fishing any day of the week... this is where the cats really shine. There also perfect for diving for the same reasons.

throttleup 01-21-2004 07:18 AM

SS930,

I agree the cats are great when the boat is still, not nearly as much rolling. They are also great in water conditions most boaters boat in. Like everything else about boats it comes down to what the owner intends to use the boat for. Take into account the advantages and disadvantages of the different boat designs and make an informed decision.

HebertNecessity 01-21-2004 10:07 AM

Jeff, you need to look at the 26 Glacier bay, way better ride than any other cat, I fish on a 48 Southern cross and a 26 GB runs better in the rough, alot better. You need to go to 50+ in a V to compete with the glacier bay. The boat doesn't plane so you can carry alot. The World may be 5mph faster but only empty. Put 10 people gear etc.. and the Glacier Bay can't be beat. They will have them in water at miami this year, you have to ride one!
