Algrip Paint
Does anyone have any experience with algrip paint, is it true you can apply it with a brush????????
|
roller.. brush.. spray.. it self levels..
|
but you can tell.. works good in engine compartments
|
i don't know about the brush thing, i've allways
sprayed it on and awlcraft 2000 is better to use it's painter friendly.you can repair it |
Skatermike,
Spray is the best application for Awlgrip. This product is very tough. One of the most durable coatings in the paint industry. It's also very expensive and difficult to work with. Temperature is vital. If your outside the temp window it will run. If your application is heavy it will run. It tough to sand out, most applications are spray and leave. Unless you have a specific application that would need extra durability I would suggest a standard two part part imron or deltron. Whirlygig |
Also don't forget this stuff is REAL toxic so make sure you have a VERY good NEW mask when you spray it.

I used it last fall to paint my bilge and engine compartment. I brushed it on and it turned out real well, you can't really tell it was brushed. I wouldn't brush it on an external surface like the hull though.
Definitely use a respirator, and wear gloves. It's difficult to get the paint off your hands/skin if it dries. I bought a gallon, but only used about half of it even with 3 coats of paint. |
brush it on then get a second and third color (smaller amount)and a clean brush... dip the brush in the other color and hold a 2" x 18" wood rod and hit the wet brush up against the wood in a downward stroke and you can splat paint the engine compartment.. with three colors very easy.. test it on a big piece of card board to get the desired look
|
If I recall correctly, this is the stuff I used in bilge. Absolutly indistructable. I have found that fuel and battery acid will stain it, but it takes a prolonged exposure to have the stain appear. It also has proven to be very scratch resistant. The comment about the respirator is absolutly correct. This is some nasty stuff! I rolled my bay using a 1.5" foam roller. You can't even tell.

Thanks guys

Sorry about that, I'm thinking about redoing my engine compartment, its white now from factory.
|
works good for that.. nice thick look to it
monty.. try putting some heat lamps into the compartment.. put them right ont he area that you want to work on... when it get warm to the touch.. work on it and then back the lamp off.. then just keep it warm to dry... should work.. i've done it before |

Customrigger, whats the going price for algrip, how does it come quart, pint etc......
Do you aply it right out of the can????????/ |
No, it's a two part system. You need a container to mix the parts. I did it in a spare paint can and then dumped it into a disposable roller tray. As I recall it was around $50 a quart!

$50 a quart is a great price, West Marine charges $79 -$109 a quart for it. I used Vivid Red and it was $309 a gallon, plus another $250 for the converter and reducer. I shoulda' bought a qaurt cause I've got half of it left.

100... WOW hook me up. Best stuff out there for custom color engine compartments. Make sure to be CAREFUL when applying it, it is dangerous stuff.

You should try to do it on a day that is 60 degrees or more. It stays tacky for awhile under 60. It is truely amazing stuff. Thats what is used on the big offshore fishing boats that you see in seafoam green and that pale yellow.
|
Where is the best place/cheapest to buy it?
|
Ospreyproduction, can you spray over existing Algrip. My deck was painted and their are some places that need to be resprayed. My deck was also sprayed in charleston.
|
I don't think that there is a problem with that but I am going to check with the Dali-Lama of painters here.

Here is one in purple.

Mike,
If you haven't already painted the bilge, be sure you get the right additive for it. Each is different. 1 is for spray and a different 1 is for rolling it on. |

If you get a few runs and have the patience can you wet sand and buff them out or will it show?

Skatermike24,
I was thinking of doing under my hatch and in the bilge area myself. Last summer when I put the hole in the bottom of my boat the guy painted it with AWLGRIP. I also saw a friends 28 with Awlgrip under the hatch etc and it comes out GREAT even with the brush. Now I want to get going on mine. I have a question for you guys. If I bring my boat from my lake house to weekday house and put it in the heated garage, will the smell go through the entire house? Or, should I wait till it warms up around here to do it? Thanks. |
FUMES WILL TRAVEL AND U WILL HAVE A LINGERING SMELL THAT WOULD MOST LIKELY GIVE EVERYONE IN THE HOUSE A HEADACHE:D :D
|
Ya Shane you DO NOT want to do this stuff in the house/garage!!!!! Not only will the fumes fill the house but they are VERY dangerous for you the wife and kids pets and anything else in the house. Waite tell it is warm enough and then do it outside. The temperature of the boat is just as important as the temperature of the outside. So keeping it inside the night before is a good idea in the spring so that the boat is already at 60 when the outside gets up to that temperature.

I was going to use Awlgrip, but wound up with Interthane Plus. It can also be rolled or sprayed. I tried brushing a few small parts but it left brush marks. I then sprayed them and they came out great. Super glossy!
One piece of advise, make sure you de-greese/wax before you sand, and make sure everything is clean, clean, clean! Any little particle that lands on the wet paint will be noticable. I also thinned it more than recomended because my gun did not have the right size tip. |
