Merc will be unveiling their new 4-stroke outboards at the Miami show. This is a clean sheet for them- no Yamaha influences, all Merc engineering.
Supercharged, and very conservatively rated at low boost (for the time being;) ) at 250 HP, with growth potential to at least 400. Should prove to be an interesting new design- can't wait to see it!:) Jim |
holy cow!!! thats a monster! I'd love to see whats under the cover! :D
|
Merc has gone back to its roots- the inline six. I had heard of delays on its release due to problems keeping the power head sealed- supposedly the two bottom cylinders are VERY close to the water's surface.
My biggest question is octane- they made the mistake of requiring premium for both the 250XS and the 300X, and it's costing them a lot of sales. Will the supercharger require the high octane? If it does, the scenario will be the same........... Jim |
any word on what the dissplacement of the engine?
|
Are they using 8-71's or 14-71's !!:D :D
It looks like they have room for it ! |

That's amazing....it's only a matter of time before the 2-strokers are history. The EPA laws are crunching on everyone....it's nice to see that they can still get good power in a 4-stroke. The cowl is huge but I guess if you have a supercharged inline-6 you need it!!!!
|
Won't be seeing them on any small boats. They are pretty big, and look bigger and heavier than the other 4 stroke outboards.
|
Is that guy 3' tall?
That thing is Huge. |
they are for beating Dinosaur eggs
|
Man that thing must be friggin' heavy! It's really unfortinate that there is no future for the 2 strokes.
|
I'm not sure on the displacement- the details of this engine have been kept under wraps pretty well.
The competition is pretty stiff with these things- Suzuki just came out with a 250 4-stroke that is almost weight comparable to the 2 -strokes, and has nearly the torque too. The 2-strokes are FAR from dead, in fact Merc, Rude, and Yammie high pressure injected engines all pass the upcoming tightest EPA and CARB regs. They have also got the fuel efficiency equal or better than the 4-strokes, and are a helluva lot lighter and faster. The new one to watch are the E-Tec Evinrudes, which beat their previous injected engines by 30-40% in efficiency and emisssions. They run on fuel/oil mixtures as thin as 200-300:1. Not much oil usage at all! The days of the noisy, stinky 2-stroke are gone. The new Rudes have a 7 year warranty! |
Ring-dingdingdingdingding....... Ring-dingdingdingdingding....... Ring-dingdingdingding... no more...:D
