Budman I think your best bet is to have a new surround put on your speaker. It will cost you much less and it is VERY important that you put the same model speaker back in the cabint. The cabinet is actually designed around the speaker, or they have the speaker made special for them, so your best bet is to have it rebuilt. Probalby cost you about 40 or so bucks.

Thanks, Jon.

I am afraid it might be blown, from the sounds it was making while it was hooked up. Is there an easy way to tell if the voice coil is blown? Could the deterioration of the surround cause it to make the buzzing sound?

Eminence Speakers is right up the road from me in Eminence, Ky. They manufacure a lot of speakers used for musical amps and PA systems. I'm going to try to contact them and see if they can help me out.

Thanks for the response!

I had Jamo in-ceiling surround speakers in my last house in my bedroom and the great room - loved them - very good quality, no problems ever. I only used them for surround applications; however, still like my Definitive Tech for audio listening....

deteriorated surround will usually make a "flapping/smacking" sound, but can also make a buzzing sound.

If your coil was popped, she wouldn't make ANY noise. Open coil = no motion.
Like audio says, can't just match "impedance and size" and expect to have it sound the same.

There are surround kits you can buy mail order or you can have it professionally done. 1988 isn't old.

I have some Klipsch Heresys that date to 1982 and show no signs of being "elderly".
