OT- federal employees

The mrs is considering a federal job. This one is a bit different in that she'll be working out of the home instead of a office. Anybody here a federal employee? How is it? The benefits really look pretty good-especially the vacation time.

GregP 02-06-2004 02:05 PM

I'm not a federal employee, but a "beltway bandit" at a government facility. The government benefits are pretty par with civilian, vacation is possible better, but they have pretty strict limits to what you can hire someone for.

I hire most of the people under our contract. Once they have worked there for a while the government can hire/transfer the people in at a comparable salery by using their current salary as a "comp".

Be aware, at least around here it takes a good 10 months to get a government offer letter out.

What do you mean by "offer letter"? An offer of employment?

GregP 02-06-2004 02:11 PM

Yes. To make someone an offer for employment here takes about 10 months from when te position is opened and a candidate is selected.

Craig-It's friday and I'm kinda slow-you're gonna have to expand on that for me.

Greg-I'd expect nothing less from the government!

Cord,

It's great. You can't beat the security and benefits. People will argue that the pay sucks, but that only applies to the 10 percenters.
Plus retirement that you don't have to contribute to and investments. Plus, health care is covered even after retirement.

Cord 02-06-2004 04:01 PM

10%er's?

bryanspeedracer 02-06-2004 04:05 PM

Yes, 10%'ers.

10% of employees that are below average,
10% of employees that are above average.

(Average in terms of pay only, folks)

I have been a contractor for the gubmint for about 18 yrs now and I can tell you that we toss all resumes of people that have been gubmint employees for 3 or more years into the trash unless we know them. This is due to the fact that they usually have terrible work ethics and expect to take off anytime they want.
