Default Mercury HP540 EFI

What would you have to do to make 540 out of a HP500,
not just the internal changes but fuel and ignition as well?

Is anyone doing it already> Cost/performance?

Seems like this would be an awesome upgrade at rebuild time.

Innovation Marine is doing it. Porting the heads and remapping the computer gets you 555(+/-) HP at the crank. You can reach them at:

941-355-7852.

Full rebuild and upgrade about $8000.

Thanks for the reply. My buddy Tom got them to do his 500's and got 565 at the crank. I guess i thought there would be ore to be had with the 540's.

We are able to make 590 w/ the 500 EFI's. We change the heads, cam, reprogram and several other things. Cost is around $8000.00. Give me a call if we can help you.

How much to go to 540/572 CID and keep the reliability/EFI system?

Looking for at least 200 more horsepower over stock. Want to keep it as reliable as the stock 500's.

Standard deck 540's are a crank and a set of pistons away. If you're turning your own wrenches, you can do it for less than $2k per motor. That alone won't net you but another 30 horses.

BUT 540's with big AFR heads, Extrude honed intake, and a fairly mild cam will get you a stone reliable 650+hp that should compare with the longevity of the HP500. This will run more like $6k per if you're wrenching.

Remember, the longevity of a marine motor is tied directly to the valve lift and spring pressures. Bottom end, ring life, things like that are not limiting factors. It is the spring and lifter life.

Extra-long valves, extra-long springs, and Jesel rockers go a long way towards extending life in big HP. Just remember that they are expensive and add nothing to horsepower, their purpose is dependability and reliability.

Thanks for your input! Do you engine builders agree?
Who can do it and for what cost?

PS: Mcollinstn: Probably not going to make Cumberland this year since we are going to 1000 Islands in August. Why don't you and your buddy in the MTI plan on going also.

Haven't broke out the calendar yet.

I know the MTI is in the midst of a HP upgrade.
Heads, cams, boost.
One of the ECU's went psycho and melted one of the 575's on a run a couple months ago.

I expect it will be in the 850 horse range when it comes back out to play. The drives are still such a pain on that boat - hopefully the kinks have been worked out of the Bmaxes. Smelling gear oil at 104 just plain sucks.

I'll let you know when we mark the calendars.

peace.

I have a friend who has nothing but bad luck with B-maxes 3 broken prop shafts and 3 blown lowers not to mention shift cable issues due to a tight bend that e corrected. 800hp efi motors in a 36 daytona he was hoping those drives would hold up but oh well. What has you issues been with them.
