Boating and hats

I am sure I am not the only one that has this problem. You see, I am a tad thin in the hair dept. up top. I have a horrible time keeping baseball caps on when boating and without a hat my little head will burn to a nice bright red. I am not really a do-rag kind of guy. What do you folks do to keep your hats on when boating or do you know of a hat that will stay on at speed? Websites are welcome.

Formula Outlaw 02-10-2004 04:29 PM

Make sure it's good and tight, though thankfully I don't have the "thinning" problem. Also, go punk and turn it around backwards. That what Hyperbaja does.:D

CAP071 02-10-2004 04:32 PM

Use a hat strap - found here:

Hat Strap

Pointerman 02-10-2004 05:03 PM

Even backwards doesn't help that much. I've lost plenty of them in reverse. The Kap Strap may keep me from losing my hat, but it won't keep it on my head so I will still get fried.

I found this. It is a helmet liner, but it might do the trick. Not sure about the "hood" look to it though.

Duct Tape:)

Madcow 02-10-2004 05:39 PM

I just do the dew rag when I'm running and take it off when I stop. Fortunately the boat gets a lot more attention than I do.

I'm like Madcow, do rag when running, and hat when stopped. If I remember to switch.:)

Btw, my cousin fell out laughing the first time he saw this picture, he thought I had a red jockstrap on my head!:D

mikev 02-10-2004 06:06 PM

i have the same problem so I use this stuff banana boat spray that way i can leave the hat off if I am running fast but put it back on when I stop.

Crazyhorse 02-10-2004 06:29 PM

I just tighten it up until my eyes bug out and my brain goes into blood starvation. It's always on when I come to,,,,,,,,

Obviously your hats cost too much money.Buy a cheap hat that you really despise the looks of.After all you are just trying to keep your head from burning.Let your friends pick the hat you really hate. That hat will stay with you a looong time!Guaronteed!

JPD Motorsports 02-10-2004 10:35 PM

Staples and lots of them:D ::D :D

Iggy 02-11-2004 05:54 AM

Baja Fresh, Krazy Glue won't work. It looses it's grip if it gets wet. :D

I'm in the same boat, need coverage for the "dome".
Maybe the Do-Rag is the way to go. Find a bright red one (not like Cuda's jock strap :D), stick a large round ring in one ear and call myself a pirate.

Indy 02-11-2004 07:23 AM

SPF 30 works fine for me.

Formula Outlaw 02-11-2004 07:27 AM

Cuda: a picture that is deserving of the "post office wall"

dkwestern 02-11-2004 07:42 AM

Backwards hats work for me until I turn around and look behind me. Stupid move, but I can't help it.

Opposite problem, long hair and a lot of tangles.
I go for the combo effect. Do Rag, then hat

I need a hat to keep the bald spot on the crown of my head from burning to a crisp , plus I can't stand having my hair whipped for a long time.. makes my scalp hurt.... but I can't stand the punk backwards look... even with the hat on backwards... if you happen to look over your shoulder... it's history. I took a regular baseball hat and unstitched the bill... took some scissors and cut the bill down to 1''. and then stitched the cloth back on... tightened until my eyes bugged out and then put a leash on the back... it occasionally blew off.. but didn't go far... just windmilled around behind me until I was strangled..

Pantera1 02-11-2004 03:39 PM

Ms P ..Id be glad to hold your hat down for ya ;)

Nope. Not like others of my generation. The first sign of mental retardation is wearing your clothes backwards.

SUPERSTITIOUS 02-11-2004 05:34 PM

Hay? Maybe thats why i see people with hoop earings on top of their ears!! What a great anchoring point. just attach a few small clasps on either side if the cap and yer good ta go!

CBlakeNS 02-11-2004 06:58 PM

My dad always loses his hats so he just puts them on backwards lol

OMG... give the boy a cookie!!!! I would love to see someone under the age of thirty that doesn't wear their hat either backwards... or sideways...

Havasu Cig 02-11-2004 09:23 PM

Remember to protect your ears as well as the top of your head. I always wore a basball cap, but just had surgery to remove some skin cancer from my ear. They had to do some skin graphs because of the size of the skin they removed, pretty bad experience. The baseball caps are no longer an option for me.

The doctors are telling me long sleeve shirts and a hat with a brim, along with the usual sun screen. It is going to suck, but it is better than the alternative.

Be careful and protect yourselfs.

R Addiction 02-11-2004 09:49 PM

Mrs. P., I'll keep you covered...just tell me when and where!!

My doc has been treating me for several skin lesions on top my head and face. He froze them but they keep coming back. The back and sides of my neck are permanently red from sun damage.
BTW I've heard all the jokes about being a red neck.
