Any thoughts on Mercs new Verado OB?

Any thoughts on Mercury's new Supercharged 4-stroke Verado outboards?

I t is heavy as hell. But if it has as big of torque as they say it does it might still have good top end speed. I want to see the 250 vs. 250 comparison on the same boat. (250xs vs. 250 verado) That should tell the tale. It is very interesting that they are supposedly getting the reliability with 12 pounds of boost. Time will tell I guess. DK

Cord 02-12-2004 09:56 AM

They say it's 630 lbs. "Lightest in it's class". I assume they are refering to 4 strokes. How much does the old 225 weigh?

Havasu Cig 02-12-2004 11:00 AM

I don't know what the 225 weighs, but the 2.5 280 hp weighs in the 360# range, and the 300x weighs in at about the mid 400 range.

Cord 02-12-2004 11:02 AM

OoOfad!

SS930 02-12-2004 11:23 AM

Want to know why it's so heavy???

(Took these from S&F, from this morning in Miami)

SS930 02-12-2004 11:23 AM

SS930 02-12-2004 11:25 AM

:p

SS930 02-12-2004 11:25 AM

Thanks Greg! ;)

SS930 02-12-2004 11:26 AM

Now you see why it weighs so much?:D

Cord 02-12-2004 12:00 PM

It's up on mercs web site. Under products click on outboards.

I caught a sneak preview some where on the net and you could not even tell the motor was running. They were testing it on the back of a center console. I think the preview was on the Diamond Marine website. Very impressive piece from Mercury Marine.

mr_velocity 02-12-2004 12:23 PM

My neighbor has Hondas on the back of his boat, when he is out fishing he never turns them off. You don't know they're running and they barely sip the gas.

Cord 02-12-2004 12:45 PM

There is a video on the Merc site. They are driving a bass boat down some channel in Florida (?). The driver is talking normally and you can NOT hear the engine. Of course, you also can't hear any water splash, but it's impressivly quiet.

DPT MOTORSPORTS 02-12-2004 01:23 PM

Here is the link that I spoke of and I stand corrected as it came from the Mecury site. Notice it is being tested as an SOB.

CigDaze 02-12-2004 01:26 PM

Wow, that looks bad-azz.
If it's as reliable as they say it is, we could have a winner.

Ric232 02-12-2004 07:59 PM

Looks cool, but I have to predict failure on this one.

Scott B 02-12-2004 08:21 PM

Its in the correct weight range for a four stroke.. Powerband remains to be seen on it tho.. Sucker is big tho

Is that a Whipple?

GregP 02-13-2004 06:47 AM

When they get it bumped to say 400 HP I'll be interested.

mcollinstn 02-13-2004 07:21 AM

It is a Lysholm Screw supercharger, like a Whipple.

Heavy SOB.

mcollinstn 02-13-2004 07:33 AM

Word out LAST YEAR was that the new Merc Racing version of the charged stroker would debut at 325hp, and that it was planned to be developed into a 450hp version that would still meet "green" standards.

Cord 02-13-2004 08:10 AM

I don't think they can release a 450hp outboard. There is some standard that limits them to 300hp. I believe that's where the 300x falls in. The standard allows a certain % of hp range. The 300x is just at the higher end of the range.

mcollinstn 02-13-2004 08:21 AM

No, the 450 was to be the race version where they do not release official hp numbers. Not a "consumer" motor.

Just like the race Optimax is pushing 350hp.

What standard? It must be an internal industry standard (i.e. NMMA).

Cord 02-13-2004 04:47 PM

Can't say. I'm thinking it's a ANSI standard but I'm not sure. I remember reading about it when they introduced the X series. MC is proably right about the standard only applying to production engines.

First report from a demo ride!
Sounds like Merc has a winner.
