Daytona Kills Cleanup worker
 

Anyone know what happen, I heard that it was a handicap racecar driver with hand controls and hit a cleanup worker going 180 mph. Is this true have not heard anything on the news yet.

I was watching when it happened. It was the race they used to call the goody's dash series and there was a bad accident. While they were cutting the guy out of a car and cleaning the track cars pitted under the yellow. As the cars left the pits they were told to catch up to the main pack of cars and a worker ran onto the track on turn two to clean up debris and was struck at 100 mph. The race was stopped for about 1hr and 30 min. while the police dept. did an accident investigation. They said in turn two at 100 mph you only have about 200 feet visibility in front of you and that the fact the driver was handicapped played no part in the incident. It was a tragedy.

I've been on a banked track (Rockingham) one time (on a bike) and it is no lie when they say that you have limited visibility in front of you. Pretend that you are driving on a "loop the loop" part of a HotWheels track. The track curves UP and LEFT. On a motorcycle tucked in for speed you have to pick your head up off the tank and look straight up with your eyes as far as you can - and it ain't far enough for comfort. In a car, with your head strapped in place and the roof of the car there, it's GOT to be worse than a bike.

gotta wonder about the training program they put track workers through. Not sure how it works at a Nascar race, but at bike races, they are mostly volunteers.

I have done laps at Indy and Daytona, it is what they say! :eek:

I thought they had radio contact? I guess no one told him to slow it down n watch out coming out of that turn?
