fuel "economy"

just curious to see what everyone's getting as far as fuel "economy" in their boat/engine setup...twin 6 cyl. outboards on offshore boats usually get between 1-2 mpg at cruising speeds, how does this compare with your boat/engine setup? obviously the really radical engines will be less fuel eficient...I am wondering about the usual "stock" setups''....just curious in these "gas pricing" days

Single 502 MPI in a Baja 272. At 3500 I get 3.3 MPG.

PhantomChaos 02-23-2004 11:07 AM

I always count on about 1mpg (twin HP500EFI)

Single 454 Mag MPI, 24 Superboat, I think I am getting around 4-5 MPG. I average around 10 gallons per hour at an average of 50 MPH. Not Bad!

Reed Jensen 02-23-2004 11:33 AM

* gasp* 10 gallons per hour at 50 mph.... that's thrifty... I was 80 gallons an hour at 60 mph...

BigSilverCat 02-23-2004 11:41 AM

im pretty sure i am in the several gallons per mile range.

38' Formula, 12,000 lbs, 600 Innovations = 1.00000 mpg @ 55 mph
28' BatBoat, 4,000 lbs, 600 Typhoon = 3.5 mpg @ 65 mph :D

me either but was told anyway

24G/HR @ 3500 RPM
going to be an expensive summer

glassdave 02-23-2004 01:32 PM

i tracked mine with GPS distances most of the summer and compared it to fuel used and found i am getting about 1.25 MPG. i am running a pair of stock 260 small blocks in a 26 foot scorpion. i could probably do better but i run them just about WOT all the time :D (hey they're small blocks . . cant hurt em :p )

My cruiser made my old cat look economical.
0.86 mpg on the cruiser. And the gen burns ful even when it's standing still!
Twin 525SCs got over 1 mpg in the cat.

Chuck, you could pick up another 1 mpg by losing that bimini!

As far as mine, I really don't know, and I don't want to know, especially because I have to run 93 octane in it.:(

thedonz 02-23-2004 03:33 PM

seems to me that other things equal, 2 stroke outboards are more gas hogs than performance inboards

mopower 02-23-2004 04:07 PM

272 Formula with t/330s 3000 rpm 42mph 1.5 mpg

272 Formula with t/540s 3000 rpm 50mph don't know
