marine speakers

I am wanting to install a couple of 6.5 speakers in my arch. I am looking at kenwood, clarion or memphis. If you have any knowledge about any of these or would recommend anything else.

LapseofReason 02-24-2004 08:46 AM

MB quart make's a real nice 6.5 but they are pricey. I think the top ones are 500 a pair.

LapseofReason 02-24-2004 08:48 AM

How deep is the arch? that will be the biggest problem with how good of a speaker you can put in, unless you want to use spacers.

Talk to Audio.

FWK 02-24-2004 10:11 AM

Lapse of reason is right most of the time you have to have a spacer as there is not enough mounting depth for the speaker.

Tricky919 02-24-2004 11:14 AM

I have used Both Kenwood and Clarion and both sounded great..................

Wellby 02-24-2004 11:30 AM

If you have the depth... BABB

FWK 02-24-2004 11:35 AM

Babb does not make a 6.5" speaker. I wish they would. Every time I place a order I ask them to do that. Maybe someday they will. So he is back to clarion, Mb quart and all of the others that are mentioned.

I have 6 of the MTX pro series 6.5's (cockpit) and 4 reg MTX 6.5 (cabin) in my Sonic, they retailed for 270 a pair I got them on close out for 80 a pair. I looked at a lot of speakers and could not pass up the deal. I also got 2 MTX amps 1 1200 watt 5 ch. and 1 1000 watt sub amp. I was never a fan of the MTX stuff back in the 80's and 90's in my cars but I picked up about 3k retail for 800 on close out and it sounds great and has for 2 1/2 years.

FWK 02-24-2004 12:20 PM

I use MTX amps they have a good warranty and sound good enough for boats.

RollWithIt 02-24-2004 12:54 PM

Check out the 6.5's from Kicker. They have a marine series of speakers which I got in my boat and they not only crank, but are clear also. Dont remember the price off hand, got them installed last year. Just call around some of the local audio shops to get prices.

BAJA WILL 02-24-2004 04:33 PM

Of all mentioned go wit the MB Quart, they are the best but you pay for it:crazy: I have also had good experience wit the Kicker marine 6.5

WILL:p

LapseofReason 02-24-2004 04:52 PM

When I set up my Sonic I wanted to go with the best then I found the MTX deal and went with it. I'm glad I did because the way mine is set up it has 2200 watts and kills both battery's in about 1 1/2 cd's. So I have to run the gen. if I'm going to turn it up so the little noise I get from the gen would still be there even if I had the best speaker.

Plus with all the time I spend sitting on a DYNO doing runs my hearing aint what it used to be so I don't need the best. And it would only be the best for about a week.:D

I didnt have very good luck with the kenwood, i switched to Polyplaner's and have been very happy.

Rockford fosgate has a new marine line / I would look in to that. Buy the way Rockford owns M.B. quart. Look at there marine radios and you will see.

Pantera1 02-24-2004 08:02 PM

You may need to check what kind of amperage your pulling with those amps. I had 2800 watts in my last boat and it would last a good 6 hours at full volume on two battery's. MTX amps are not known for being very efficient.

I sell and stock the new MBQuart marine radio with 30 second anti skip memory, low battery shutdown, and many other marine related advantages including wired remote option. I also stock their MBQuart marine speakers, BABB speakers, and many others.

Feel free to call me at 813-882-8477 for assistance in making the right choice.

Infinity Kappas 6.5 inch with separate tweeters. Have 6 in my arch. They are not marine and are holdingup well. I'm not sure you can see them well in this pic.

boat4life 02-24-2004 11:52 PM

MB quarts or Focal audio are two awsome 6.5's

Strip Poker 388 02-25-2004 12:07 AM

I been having trouble with the tweeters in my Polyplaner's. They don't seem to get very loud. not very efficient .

I also need to up grade . I already have the power and subs .JUST need some volume.
someone told me to try the alpine 6 1/2 marine ?. The kickers looked pretty good also.

I guess all are made in japan??

carter38 02-25-2004 05:27 AM

Look at kicker, did a whole boat in kicker it was awesome, or rockford just came out with some new stuff with dual tweeters.

wetpleasure 02-25-2004 07:29 AM

Thanks for all of the advice. Jimmy baja that looks crazy! and yes I am going to have a spacer only have 1.5 inc. of depth. I am wanting marine speakers because my cockpit cover will not cover these When I am pulling down the road. I have all my good speakers down in the cockpit. (6*9- 6.5- 10sub- horn tweeters)

Has any one hear of Image Dynamics sub woofers. I am told they are a top of the line sub.

Pantera1 02-25-2004 07:54 AM

Infinity

Infinity makes a marine version of the Kappas ..

chuck21401 02-25-2004 02:56 PM

I had a set of 6.5" alpine speakers in my old boat that sounded pretty good. Not the best but good for the price ($120/pair)

http://iweb.alpine-usa.com/pls/admn/...=185&p_main=10

I would recommend that you use a crossover (active or passive) to filter out the low end otherwise you'll get distortion at high volumes.

Andy Buzz 02-25-2004 09:43 PM

I will agree that Image Dynamics makes a great sub. I have been a dealer of theirs for ten years. I sell those as well as numberous brands. Call 813-882-8477 and mention OSO for adeal.
