Tell me about the Bertram Barron

I was looking at a 28' Bertram hull sitting in a marina this weekend. What is the history of this boat? It looks like it was a pretty nice package back in its day. Was this a competitor of the early Cigarettes? Are they worth anything today?

The orriginal Bertram Baron boat for their brochure - was mine - I repowerd it - enjoyed it - and sold it -

it was my first Offshore race- and I won it - in 1972 - the beginning of what was eventually to become NNRT

I have a few photos left -

email me with your email address - and I will send you some photos -

I had one. They only made a handful of 28's. They came with Ford 351's with Volvo drives or a 6 cylinder Mercruiser with some little Mercury drive. I had a red and white one. It had a set of 440 Olds engines. I'm telling the truth - not kidding. A guy I know put them in the boat. He also rebuilt the boat known as "The Little Cigarette" in New Jersey where I grew up. Another guy I knew who's name is Phil from New Jersey raced one called "Needle Nose." A blue 28' Bertram Barron.

BTW....

That is a BARON,
The seats were so close togeather you had to spin one sideways to get to the back seat, an slide between them.
They only came with two power options.
Twin 351 Fords- volvo drives- 270- no trim.
Twin Mercs. 165's Merc Drive, U could trim that baby.
I'm not sure but i think they only made 12 of them.

In the mid 70's there was a 28 Barron Raceboat called "Baby" , anyone else remember it?

lucky strike 03-08-2004 10:57 AM

Think Baby belonged to Al G. from point.

Thats my guess ????

Thanks for the replies. Phil, I'll email you. These boats are narrow. Look like they'd cut through some pretty good waves. Seems like it could really be a pretty interesting project boat to restore.

Needle Nose was awesome back in the day.!!!!!

Here's a great shot Phil emailed me.

ScottB 03-08-2004 04:28 PM

Please e-mail me that shot

open87 03-08-2004 06:35 PM

they have 1 here in new orleans that has been sitting for years. needs alot of work and if my memory is correct it had the ford power.. thought the lines were real nice.

JROMY 03-08-2004 10:45 PM

ScottB - Let me know if you got the shot. Email me at [email protected] and I'll send it to you if you didn't.

I'm going to do a little checking and see if there is any chance of picking up this hull if its for sale. Hull seems in good shape and solid (transom is THICK!). There are no engines, or interior. Anybody have thoughts on what it might be worth? It sure looks like it might be a great solid ride with some new power and updates. I'm also curious to see if this particular hull has any of the race history that some of the others obviously do.

Thanks again for all the input!

Re: Tell me about the Bertram Barron

Sorry to jump in this thread so late. I just joined this forum today. I also own a 28' Bertram Baron, hull number 14 (white/red). The boat is technically 7'6 inches wide I beleive and is 30 feet with the outdrives. Ours has been repowered with twin LT1 Chevy's putting out around a combined 750-800hp. I am planning on redoing everything (fiberglass, paint, chrome, engines, electricals) on the boat after this season and would be much appreciated of any info that can be provided. Up until this thread I knew of only 5 left in the world. 4 in NH, 1 in France.

TCM- you may want to email Phil M (his email is up above). He had pictures and alot of information from when he raced.

Hi TCM- I realize I am responding to a thread from 2004... do you still have the boat? I am very curious what you have done with it. I am in the process of working two bertram 28' hulls.
