Trailer Question (torsion axles)
 

Im looking at a used snowmobile trailer and the owner is telling me it has about 10K miles on it.
He told me this before it was for sale and I was given his name as a reference from the builder so I believe it to be pretty accurate give or take.
The question is, How many miles are the torsion axles (bushings) good for? I would change all bearings but thats not a big deal or $$ anyway. Im just wondering if Ill need to rebuild the axles.
Trailer is a 2 place in line with twin 3500lb axles so I wouldnt say it has been overloaded (sleds and eqipment, 1400lb max)

Torsion axles hold up much better and longer than leaf springs. Wanna call Chris Hyde? I will PM his number if you want it.

tantrum, i have to agree with shane. torsion axles are the way to go..just maintain the trailer and it will last you longer than what anyone can tell you. dave

This is a trailer that I was looking at last year. I dont know if I ever showed you but here is a pick.
I was almost decided on a stagered Renegade but they were pricing out at 6K+ and then this one became available used. I figure I can try it and for the money he wants get out of it with out loosing too much if I dont like it.
Other than picking up a trailer we are done with sledding for the year. Florida last weekend really helped get our boat heads on ;)

I wish I had gotten torsion axles on my first trailer,,, they ride SOOOO much smoother, don't bounce around like leaf's.. They will be on my next trailer.. I was wondering about longevity also,, there isn't much to go wrong w/ leafs...

I haven't sold a trailer in about 12 years that DIDN'T have torsion . IT will be fine. I have one customer that has well over 300k miles on his trailer and always loaded heavy and it still has life left . ONe way to tell is put a jack on one side at the rear corner of the trailer .lift the wheels off the ground and see how much they drop . It won't be but an inch or so . To realy see , lift the whole back up at the same time . If they realy drop ,then they have ware . But you relay don't even need to check it . Just buy it if it is a good deal !

Check the tires REAL close for signs of uneven ware . Torsion is really rigid and is prone to bending easy . If you hit a curb or pot hole , they bend easy . Also if you have to drive over something like a curb ,or even backing down a boat ramp (boat trail obviously) that is steep , you put the FULL load on only one axel and it can bend easy . Just something to remember ....... Joe

My race car trailer had torsion axles. It was overloaded about 50% of the time by about 15%... I think it had about 15,000miles on it when I sold it. Axles were tight as new. Brakes on the other hand were a different story.:rolleyes:

We have been using torsion axles since '95. No problems or warranty issues. Definately no concern there.
