Digital camera help!!
I'm looking at buying a digital camera. I have limited knowledge about them. Can I get a decent one for $300-400.
|
I'm looking for one also. I don't want a $1,000 camera Just something I can shoot pics with at boat races and boat shows and the occasional bikini shots
|
I just bought one in December at Office Depot.
Canon A60, 2 megapixels, 256MB card. $199 for everything! Sure, everybody will say you "must have" 3.2 or 4 or 5 megapixels, I researched these things for almost a year, narrowed it down to the Panasonic and the Canon, decided on the Canon based on the special they were running which included the 256mb card (a $79 value). It's plenty for me for now. For lots of info on cameras go to: www.cnet.com |

I got a Fuji Finepix F700. 6.2 megapixel, 3X optical, 2.2 digital. Came with charging/download cradle and USB cable. $400.00. I got it for the new baby but also takes great macro shots of the corals in my fish tank!

Another tank shot, the right side. I still haven't figured the camera out yet and I know it can take great pictures.

I recently bought a Fuji FinePix S3000 for $230 at walmart, Walmart had the best price for this camera.. It is a 3.2 mega pixel, with 6x optical zoom... It was the best bang for your buck that I could find

I dont know much about them, but everyone I talked to about them pushed me to buy the Sony. I bought a Sony 5 mega pixel about 3 months ago for Right at $400, so far it has been doing an excellent job.
|
If you are gonna shoot boats and a tad T&A you need a 10x OPTICAL zoom more than anything...Check out the Olympus line...
|
I went on consumer reports and checked out what they said. They also have links to stores for the best deals. I bought my nikon thru newegg.com. There are a lot of other places to buy them cheap. I bought a coolpix 5700 for 680.00. I love it. It was worth the money to subscibe to consumer reports. Later Cliff

I've got 3.
I use my teeny tiny Sony DSC-U20 more than any others. It is TEENY, hangs around your neck or in your pocket, opens and starts one handed - is ready to shoot in 1 second (as long as you use no larger than a 64MB card, bigger than that slows the startup time). Takes great pix. No zoom, no Macro mode - just convenient size and great pix. They now have it as a DSC-U40 for $199 RETAIL (cheaper on the street by a long shot). My Olympus with the 10x zoom takes the best pix of my 3. Larger camera and is a hassle on all-day trade show duty. The Mavica is just a good 3.5" floppy workhorse. Not particularly small, not particularly wonderful pix, just a good dependable camera. All my friends have digicams, but they always borrow my tiny SONY when they are going to Daytona, etc.. |
Thanks for all the info. I have been looking at the fuji line. I guess I needed some reassurance.

Bought a Kodak DX6490 around Christmas. I have taken about 600 pics with it and love it! 10X optical zoom, 4 megapixel ($499). It all boils down to what do you want to do. If you want quick point and shoot do like Mcollinstn said and use the sony DSC-U20. If you want zoom action occasional bikini shot get a good optical zoom like gdfatha said. More than 3 megapixels is a waste unless you plan on blowing up and printing something larger than a 8 x 10. I take all of my pictures in 3 megapixel mode so I have more room on the card. I wanted a good zoom as we have kids in sports and I wanted to get in on some of the action.
If I can do this right, compare these two photo's. I took these on a recent trip off the cruise ship we were on in port. I noticed a boat docked that was sinking and took two photo's, one in normal mode and one zoomed in 10x. You tell me how cool this is. Look for the sunken ship. |

BINGO STEVEO,, thats the place to go to make your decision, I just bought a A2 minolta ' large camera" and a Canon A70 portable camera, of course the site has been around for 4 years Im on my like 7th year of using Digital paid thousands for the first one and the prices have come down a lot |
SteveO, That looks to be the camera to look at more closely. Thanks for showing the two pics. The Kodak has awsome range. Thanks, :)

WoW THanks Guys. I want 1 for all still pictures of things up close , but the occasional Boat races will be nice to have It for.
Do either have movie capability with sound? |
Now I have another question! Am I right, the kodak DX6490 doesn't have an upgradeable memory card? How many images can you get on internal card?
|
Do either have movie capability with sound? The Kodak has movie capability with sound. What I like about this one was that it has an unlimited time for taking movies. Most cameras tell you have 30 sec. of video or something like that. I can take as long of a movie as I want only limited by the memory of the card. I have a 256mb card and I could do 14 minutes of continuos movie.:D Am I right, the kodak DX6490 doesn't have an upgradeable memory card? How many images can you get on internal card? It has both. I think that the internal is 8mb. External is what ever you choose. It uses the secure digital cards which are much faster at writing pictures to the card. I have the 256mb card and I can take about 230 pictures in 3.2 megapixel mode. |
PM Wicked Won and ask what kind of camera he uses.
He always has it in his pocket and gets "the shots" some of the pictures he posted or maybe all were taken with this camera and they always look nice and clear. Check out the Saber thread and I'm sure you will come across a couple Pict's:) |
I have a Cannon One Shot and a Nikon Coolpix. Coolpix wins by a mile. Cannon way too slow.
|
I copied Norts photo of an Apache:
Now is that crisp or not??:D :D :D |
I almost bought the Kodak yesterday. What scared me away from it was the fact that it did`nt take the AA sized batterys but what looks like a proprietary battery. I would`nt be able to carry extras or be able to charge them off of a 12 volt power source. That, along with the fact that there may be limited availability,if any, down the road....The search continues!

I have a Nikon coolpix 3100. I love it,pictures are
beautiful. So small it fits right in your pocket. The only complaint I have, (and it might be with all digital cameras) Is when you take a flash picture, there is, like a 1-2 second delay after you press the button, before the camera actually takes the picture. By then the person has moved and it screws the picture up. Just something you have to get used to. |
Canon Elph

I have had the Elph 300 for a couple years and like it
a lot. Real small, functional and easy to use. It's taken a beating and still works fine. Good luck Ray |
Do you have to do anything to post pictures from digital cameras, such as change the size. I ask this because I have tried to scan pictures, but they always turn out to be too large to attach. I know, I am photo illiterate. :D

re-size
I notice the board s/w will perform auto resizing.
I don't know the upperlevel threshold though. There are several commercial products you can use to resize an image such as adobe photoshop elements ot paint shop pro. Here's a link to a site I run that uses the same s/w. I would cut and paste the data but there are imbedded links to the s/w that you may like. http://www.sandiegofishing.com/buddy...?threadid=5878 |
