Scarab..Why?

1 Attachment(s)
...the market has been down for 5 years...now picking up again. Here is a boat we deamed to be efficient with and without steps...raced..loved and looks good...a couple years back a 38'Scarab I was looking at could be had for about 150K with HP 500's....they sold well...quality had improved...I personally liked em a lot....and now the molds are destroyed I hear...one thing I will never understand...

puder 03-14-2004 01:08 PM

not being produced but i heard the molds went to larry smith in cali

obnoxus 03-14-2004 01:47 PM

Larry Smith always owned the molds. Wellcraft had the contract to build the pleasure version. I hightly doubt they were destroyed. I agree,, I would think they went back to Larry Smith.

FeverFan 03-14-2004 02:44 PM

That is Joes boat. He said he would sell it, but doesn't have too. And after the fresh power goes in this week, may not want too. :D

CustomRigger101 03-14-2004 03:25 PM

long story.. but larry wanted more money for genmar and genmar didn't want to pay.. and the product was going downhill fast so.. larry pulled the contract

RollWithIt 03-14-2004 03:28 PM

Makes sense, I would pull my contract also if some company was going to half a$$ a product with my name attached. Real shame though. I can remember as a kid growing up in the late 70's early 80's thinking how nice the old Wellcraft boats were.

frequentflyer 03-14-2004 03:49 PM

Yeah those Scarabs were nice. Are they not going to be built anymore ?

puder 03-14-2004 03:53 PM

wellcraft is out of the scarab bussiness.

i dont; even thignk the CC boats are scarabs anymore

epeek 03-14-2004 08:26 PM

Yea back in the 70's the Scarabs were cool, but then
they started cheapin them up, I think the were
chopper gun boats in the 80's

Panther 03-14-2004 08:37 PM

I have been looking at the 38's. What do you all think of the ride quality compared to say a 37 outerlimits or a 38 cigarette?

How much headroom is in the cabin?

epeek 03-14-2004 08:46 PM

I don't know about the newer ones, but I love those
older 38' KV's with the flat deck. They were great
lookin boats.

Bulldog 03-15-2004 12:46 AM

Did someone say Scarab????

Larry Smith is building the larger boats, and in the last conversation I had with him he said he built 2 38 foot nonstepped hulls.

cuda 03-15-2004 12:49 AM

I know where there is a mid nineties Scarab with triple blackhawks for sale.

I just love mine.Very solid ride in rough seas, steady as a rock.

My all time favorite 38' Scarab were the ones with purple lightning graphics:cool:

I loved my old scarab it was a great boat and the paint was ahead of its time

97BossHammer 03-15-2004 07:22 AM

..this one is doing very well....:D

IDRPSTF 03-15-2004 11:36 AM

Dan and Larry are back in the Scarab game. From the conversations I have had with Dan, the boats will be Farley customized to the owner. He is incorporating all of the best on the West Coast to build the boats. And the prices actually seem reasonable (Imagine that...Reasonable New Boat prices). I think they will do very well together. Larry in innovative, and Dan stands behind his work, how could you go wrong?

97BossHammer 03-15-2004 11:41 AM

cool.....will they still be called "scarabs" or ??????

IDRPSTF 03-15-2004 12:56 PM

I think they are sticking with Scarab. Variations of the boat that went from San Fran to LA. Good looking boats. Diesel Power, Fly by wire controls. lots of new things. I would say that between Larry and Dans new concepts, and Skip and his R&D team at Cigarette, Offshore Performance Pleasure boats are advancing at a higher pace now more than ever.

Panther 03-15-2004 04:13 PM

How much headroom is in the newer 38's?

getreal 03-15-2004 04:13 PM

My friend has a 1978 38’ race deck, Kevlar, NEVER been rigged or in the water on new trailer for sale. The boat has no holes in it and has new epoxy paint. He wants $30k for everything. Ask and I’ll get some pics. later this week.

OBNOXUS21 03-17-2004 09:28 AM

I still have my 1982 38 KV and it's running very strong!!!

robyw1 03-17-2004 11:17 AM

Any pictures or websites where we can get info on the new custom made Scarabs?

Roby

AugiePensa 03-17-2004 01:10 PM

Marty, thanks for posting a photo of my baby. Best riding machine, and no one can hit the pins the way this baby does...just a good, solid all around boat...and NO step hull.

Alright, Who's FEVERFAN? Am I being stalked? haha. In any event, FEVERFAN is right, motors going back in this week and Fresh Water Cooling as well!

Yours is one of the nicest Scarabs I have seen. I like the green. It would look a lot better on clear green water, not gonna happen in Texas though.

Roby

Joe 03-17-2004 01:31 PM

Thanks robyw1,

I appreciate it and agree - it would look better in the Emerald Coast! Not heading that way until August for the Destin Poker Run, then again in Nov. for the K West Finals (or what ever the race is going to be called this year! :p ).

Keith 03-17-2004 10:19 PM

Panther, around 5' of headroom is what you'll find in most of the 38's.
