.....calling around for insurance rates before buying..and yea shopped a bit for "Cat" insurance just in case I decide to go that route....and it is much higher...harder to get too

...know why? Agent told me the insurance underwriters looked mostly at "engines" in V-bottoms/length and mostly at "SPEED" IN CATS...to determine rates


.....now they are looking at going with SPEED and boat size more and more....for both

Facts:

...Cats have ABOUT the same number of claims nationally in the last 5 years compared to V-bottoms that have similiar "speed ratings"....casualties/injuries are similiar...and not much different to that of cruisers...most casualties were from accidents while at the gas docks...drownings while skiing...and many more in personal watercarft worldwide than in larger craft...


also.. a 100mph potential CAT is the same liability as a potential 100mph v-bottom...though Cat repairs are a bit higher on average....

....the insurance industry is just slow to adjust for huge increases in the "Average Joe's" boat speed for v-bottoms which now is doing in the mid 80's and is becoming a trend lately..and the result is that companies either will or will not insure them...

so more boaters in the 70-80+ range are being dropped or sent to the more exclusive underwriters...no matter what type boat you have....
