Swapping and reparing drives is an expertise to be avoided unless they're somebody else's and you're being paid.................NOT PAYING

I got it! I could make out most of what she said... It was'nt a stellar example of the "Queen's English" as the Brits say but Mary is allowed some latitude!

And who am I to criticize how people speak English

Good info so far, thanks. That is a pretty 50 for sure. Ya on the drive swaps, alpha to bravos. Bravos are AOK on the Sonic except when buried in a sand bar. The Bat boat guys did a good job swapping the drives in and Falcon Hi-Performance kept the drives in fine shape.

I hear you on the drives. Hustler recommends bravos for the base 50 trip 496 setup only. XRs and up for everything else.

The 50 Hustler looks VERY attractive with Yanmar 440s and number sixs, but the price difference with the XR Bravos and 575s is large.

Still curious on what speed the 575s /XRs would cruise at 3000 RPM. Anyone who has seen my Sonic converted to a fishboat knows top speed is not my main concern, particularly when the wife is yelling at me to slow down. <gg>

CBR, if you're looking for accurate info about cruising speeds with 575s, I suggest you give Chip Fendt a call at 631 208 2933.

As far as diesels are concerned, that boat with Yanmars is a great package but its price is probably too high because #6 drives have to be used. I think retail for triple Yanmars with #6s is over 700K. At this point, you may want to consider their widebody 50, "Esprit de Soleil" which can be had for about the same price but powered by 4 Yanmars. It's good for 80 mph and will cruise at 70 all day. I think they are starting to build a version of that boat with 3 Yanmars which will be good for approx. 70 mph. Because the second row of engines is eliminated as 3 Yanmars will be mounted in a single row all the way back, this will open a huge cockpit with a nice seating lounge... A very civilized boat with plenty of space and 6'6" cabin headroom. Your wife would love every minute of it. And, it will probably cost less than the regular 50' with #6s because Trimax surface drives are much cheaper.

In other words, Hustler's widebody 50' has been specifically and exclusively designed with diesel power in mind and this is why it is more cost-efficient with that type of power.

Their regular 50' is a great boat designed for gas applications and this is why it is more efficient with that type of power. Diesels however, are an after-thought on that model...
