Default I need new engine hatches made.

My new 540's are a few inches taller than the original 454/330's due to the taller single plane intake and Holley carbs. Without a flame arrestor installed, the vent tubes prevent the hatch from fully closing by about an inch. So I need to raise the engine hatch height by about 3" so I can fit a flame arrestor on top.

I don't want to add scoops for several reasons, and I want to keep the hatches flat for the full size sun pads. I was thinking of using several layers of plywood to form new hatches, cutting out the centers all of them except the top one, then fiberglassing and gel coating the plywood assembly. HAs anyone ever done something like this?

Anyone in the Chicago area know where I can have something like this made. I still have a bit of work to do on plumbing the engines, etc and would like to sub this out to someone to save time. I have the original hatches for use as templates.

I just made an engine hatch for my Magnum out of plywood and fiberglass. This weekend I will be gell coating it. I would possibly be interested in it. My only problem would be that I don't know how soon you would need them plus how much weight can you stand for them to be?

You can use Baltek balsa Decolite sheets. They are already fiberglassed on both sides. Much lighter than plywood. Michigan Fibergass Sales is supposed to be carrying it now.
