Yes they have a steeped tradition, one motor boats could never compare to. I have raced hundreds of races in my life from 80 miles to 260 miles, they are quiet and the fuel is free. I still like the point and go effect of the motor boat and will never own a sailboat. There is nothing better than chasing power boats down the channel at 9 knots with the chute up, we were not under power so people had to get out of our way There ok but I want speed and convenience so go fast it is.

I may catch some crap for saying this but..
Maybe when I get old and have my winter house on a Caribbean Island, I may look into having one tied to my dock..... Next to my go-fast of course.
As far as sailboats and the owners.... Kinda like a group of bicyclist on a busy road. In the way, a pain in the azz to get around, but have just as much right to be there as I do.

GREAT analogy
Absolutely right....
They are quite friendly though. They wave everytime I go by but usually only with one finger up? What's up with that? Just like guys fishing I get the same response.
I always wave back but with all five fingers.

While I have a strong disllike for them, generally due to the self centered "water hogs" that are aboard them, I will defend their right to be there. Like Frank said, they resemble the tree hugging "greenies" to a strong degree. The "if I don't like it, you can't do it" mentality. I actually wave to most, very seldom get a wave back, and usually only one finger. I am always curteous in going around them, slow down for them, and yet they still give me "the look". I just laugh at them, and if they are being overly obnoxious, blow them a kiss.

Don't care
But they usually are cheap f*cks
Also some of them point to the sky with a middle finger when you go by???? It's true and every time this happens I turn around and circle them a few time to make sure I see it right... very weird ritual???
