Just get threw the Mixing Bowl before 6:00am (95/495 intersection) and you should get by fine. There is a way of getting on 301 south of DC and going to the east.

GregP 04-09-2004 06:40 AM

You can bypass DC by taking 301 from just North of Richmond (the exit on 95 is marked 207, which then goes to the 4-lane sections of 301) and rejoining 95 at Baltimore (301 will take you to the 895 tunnel or you can take 695 and the Key Bridge). If it's morning rush, 301 would be faster. Otherwise with all the stoplights going through Waldorf you may be at a push time wise.

GregP's directions sound good. The only difference is I would hit 301/50, go over the Bay Bridge and continue on 301 up into Delaware. This way you bypass Baltimore too. It's a nice scenic ride with little traffic.

GregP 04-09-2004 06:52 AM

I wouldn't do the 301/50 over the bay bridge this weekend though (it's Easter getaway) or any friday night, saturday morning, or sunday morning from now through the summer.

If there is too much traffic at the Bay Bridge, pull off into Sandy Point, launch, and go for a BLAST! :D :D

Hit the Mixing Bowl ( south of Dc - intersection of 95 & 495 ) @ 5:00 am during weekdays. This will put you in the proper time frame to miss all other rush hour traffic along your route

take 495 east to 95N....through Baltimore's FT McHenry Tunnel....95N to Del Memorial Bridge....... New Jersey Turnpike........depending upon where you need to go in Jersey...... exit #11 Garden State Parkway this avoids the North Jersey & NY nightmare

tolls start @ the Ft. McHenry Tunnel than two more in MD, 2 in Del. ( including the bridge ) , NJ turnpike you pay when you get off and Garden State Pky has a ton of them

send me you AAA membership fee and I will tell ya more:D :D

GregP 04-09-2004 08:43 AM

I prefer to stay on the Philli/Trenton side and stay off of the NJ turnpike. Much nicer drive (and drivers) and saves a lot of $$ on tolls (the Del Mem bridge is steep if your towing and/or have a dually). Cross back to NJ at Edison/Perth Amboy area.

Washington is not too bad. Stay out of here between 5:30 AM - 9 AM and between 3:30PM - 7:30PM and you will be fine. The Mixing Bowl may have some traffic, but it is not worth bypassing, except maybe head down Rt. 1 just after you pass the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, and take Rt 1 through Woodbridge, and join 95 South again.

107.7 FM in Washington DC area for traffic updates on the 8s. (Every 10 minutes).

Investigate the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, you omit a good portion of VA which is a pain in the butt. You miss Richmond, Wasington, Baltimore. Take the CBBT to 301 to NJTP.

That is a great idea. I forgot all about the CBBT.

Miami 04-09-2004 09:49 AM

Interstate 95....shortest distance as crow flies
all other routes may have scenic advantages...however 95 = shortest distance, shortes time

Avoid all the crap around DC. Take the Bridge Tunnel to Rt 13 to Cape May/ Lewis Del Ferry to Garden State Parkway to NYC. Nice enjoyable ride up the coast, plus an hour ride on the ferry.

puder 04-09-2004 11:00 AM

95 all the way.

I did it in 23 hours straight pulling my race car in an enclosed 20' trailer like two months ago.

That's the route I'd go. The hour ride on the ferry is a nice break, although I don't know what they hit you for with a boat in tow.
I also prefer the GSP to the NJ Turnpike by a longshot.

Here are driving directions utilizing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. These directions will take you around the Delaware Bay. If you want, I can alter these directions so that you take the Cape May-Lewes Ferry across the Delaware Bay instead. Time wise, there is not a whole lot of difference. It is basically a matter of which you would rather do....drive an hour or spend that same hour sitting and relaxing on the ferry. One word of advice. If you decide to take the ferry while pulling the boat, play it safe and make a reservation. Here is the link...

Cape May - Lewes Ferry

And here are the driving directions........

- 95 North into Virginia.

- Take Exit 11A (58 East) towards Emporia/Norfolk.

- There will be a fork in this exit. Go to the left onto 58 East.

- Be careful on 58 East because there is usually radar everywhere!

- Follow 58 East for approximately 1 hour.

- 58 East will split - Follow signs for 264 East/64 East/13 North towards Portsmouth/Norfolk/VA Beach.

- Once on this road, take exit 15 B (Rt 64) towards VA Beach/Chesapeake.

- On 64 it is best to stay in the middle lane because there are several places where the left and right lanes must exit with little notice.

- On 64, take exit 282 (North Hampton Blvd/13North).

- On this exit, stay in the right lane and follow the right fork onto North Hampton Blvd/13North towards the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

- Stay on this road (North Hampton Blvd/13North). The middle lane is best because there are a few places again where the right/left lanes must exit.

- This road will take you across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Be prepared, the toll at the bridge is expensive ($10 just for a passenger car), but at least you get a coupon for a free soda at the scenic stop in middle of the bridge!!

- After crossing the bridge, you will be on 13 North.

- Stay on 13 North. You will go through a bunch of tiny towns on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and eventually cross over into Maryland.

- Once in Maryland, stay on Rt. 13 North. This will take you around the towns of Pocomoke and Salisbury. Shortly after passing Salisbury you will enter Delaware near a town called Delmar.

- At this point, you are approximately 2 hours past the Bay Bridge Tunnel.

- Once in Delaware, stay on Rt. 13 North towards Dover.

- After going past Dover, remain on Rt. 13 North towards Wilmington.

- Just before reaching Wilmington you will see signs for Interstate 295 and the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

- Cross the Delaware Memorial Bridge into New Jersey.

- After crossing into New Jersey, you just follow the signs for the New Jersey Turnpike. This will take you North towards New York.

From here you are on your own because I am not very familiar with New York! :D Have a safe trip.
