Who should I bet on?

A friend of mine has a 330hp Hyabusa Suzuki motorcycle. Another friend has a 140hp Harley. Both claim they are fast bikes. The Hyabusa guy says he will spot the Harley 1/8 mile in a quarter mile drag race. That is, the Harley can start at the half way mark. They are both talking about betting $10K on the drag race. The guy with the Harley says he will take all action. One run, winner takes all. The question is, "Which way should I bet?"

The Busa is fast but I do not know if they are THAT fast....

I'd bet on the HD, but it depends a lot on the rider and setups of the bike. HP is alot, but not everything. Does the busa have an extended swing arm? what about NOS or carbon fibre? THe busa can probbly do a 7 sec 1/4, but a 140 hp harleycan probably do at leas a 10 se 1/4, the second 1/8 of which will be the fastest. even if the busa can doa 6 sec 1/4, the harley will still probably win with 1/8 head start. try to get it on video at let us know who wins.

Did you ever see that truck with the twin turbine engines do the 1/4 mile in over 300mph? I wonder what his time is? The Busa guy says he can do the 1/4 in under 6 seconds. I guess you are right LostinBoston, the Busa's E.T. would have to be twice as fast to win! Way to Fast for me!

Welcome to my world.
There is much more involved in this than the horspower of the bikes involved. The bikes rider will play a big part in who wins. A 140hp Harley with a good rider and set up well may run a high 10 second pass...just a guess. I turbo Busa could run a really low 8. Some set up for the Streetbike Shootout class are running in the 7's with the record being a 7.42@198mph I believe...street legal tire, no bars. There is no way the Busa will catch the Harley unless a mistake is made and those are usually made at the line which wont make a diference in this case. It will only take the Harley about 6-7 seconds at worst to cover the last half of the track.

Mr. Demeanor, did you get the part about the Busa having "330hp"? This probably includes nitrous, I guess.

Spectre Man 04-11-2004 11:11 PM

I guess I had better stay off this bet. Like you say Mr. Demeanor too much is up to the driver. Nobody is a sure winner in this race. I think I will just let these guys have a "bar race". I think when push comes to shove, the race will never get off the ground. It's probably the booze talkin' here.

Mr. Demeanor 04-11-2004 11:40 PM

330hp has got to be a turbo. A good big block Busa might make 225hp on a motor that wouldnt last long with 100hp shot of nitrous. There are a few turbos pushing the 500hp mark. Ask him what he has, displacment, cams, who built it etc. and I will tell you within a few how much power it makes.
