Document a boat

does anybody know the requirements and process to get a boat "documented" instead of applying numbers to the hull?

Steve_H 04-13-2004 11:46 AM

missouri requirements

Von Bongo 04-13-2004 11:50 AM

Takes about 6 months then another 60-90 days with the state of Missouri to get the state sticker.

Make sure you get a certified transcript of title from the coast guard before you send your stuff to the state because they will not accept the certification of documentation.

I had marine title do mine cost about $300 I think. There are a couple of marine title co at LOTO that do it too.

stevebaretta 04-13-2004 12:00 PM

Sounds like a hassle. Is it?

Rforsey 04-13-2004 12:06 PM

If you document do you still have to register it with the state you live in???.

29KILROY 04-13-2004 12:10 PM

New York Yes, I am doing it this week!

is that reqiured for a boat with a state title?
just sent my stuff off to both the coast guard and missouri.

Von Bongo 04-13-2004 12:14 PM

In missouri you do and you have to pay an in-lue tax based on the sales price of the boat.

Hassel..yes...worth it to save on some sales tax..yes.

Still waiting on the state. I can get a temp tag from Mo good for 60 days.

IL must also because the boat came from there and had a sticker on it too and it was documented before.

Von Bongo 04-13-2004 12:20 PM

Per the letter I received from MO

Previously documented boats:

"If a vesssel was documented by the previous owner the new owner must provide proof that the united states coast guard documentation is completed in their name. A certified copy of the abstract of title in the new owners name must be submitted."

  I really am starting to hate paying NY sales tax......
If it wasn't for the boys and the EX's we would be moving TO LOTO

Payton 04-13-2004 12:51 PM

In Indiana, I still have to pay $75 per year for regestration. I would have to pay that whether it was documented or tittled.
I had the documentation transefered to me and saved the sales tax and porperty tax. :)

Rforsey 04-13-2004 02:10 PM

Payton.
I wish NY was that way in order to get title in your name you must pay sales tax between both boats that's almost 7 g's:( :(

stevebaretta 04-13-2004 02:22 PM

Holy crap!

MitchStellin 04-13-2004 02:34 PM

I am in the process of doing this also, so far it has not been too bad and to save 1000s in sales tax is worth it. The seller is dealing with most of it and it will cost me $420 for the transfer. This is like Title Ins on a home, they can do lien searches and ownership searches, the Bank loves this and the Ins Co could care less. In any case the fact you save ST and don't have to put numbers on is a plus. The only draw back I can see is the CG or Sherrif now have a reason to come along side and board you looking for this number. I am an honest citizen so what do i have to worry about. My girlfriend is 18 in one month so she doesn't have to hide anymore.:D In most cases I just tell them she is my Daughter:eek:

I think your state reg. stickers (not numbers) are to be displayed on each side of your name of the boat if the name is on the stern. When cops don't see any numbers they will look for the name and state stickers.
Documentation is an international way to clear title of a vessel. Also, don't forget to display proper size documentation numbers in the bildge.

Sydwayz 04-13-2004 02:50 PM

What about selling the boat once it is registered? Across state lines? Any issues?

Downtown42 04-13-2004 02:53 PM

shouldn't be..just need to register with your state. Documentation is Federal

I live in Kansas but am documenting in Missouri and liscensing the trailer in Kansas.

stevebaretta 04-13-2004 05:15 PM

tflb, Can you do that?????????

HUSTLEthis 04-13-2004 05:25 PM

We documented ours...saved big on taxes...and in AZ we don't have to do the state reg or any stickers...true about getting stopped w/out the numbers...definitely worth it..no renewal fees either, just mailed our in today for the next year...
We originally went through Lake Ozark Marine Documentation and Titling Services...(636)899-1575...Great service
Or call direct National Vessel Documentation Center
(800)799-8362 or (304)271-2400

Yes.

I will document using Morgan County Mo because I tell them that, that is where I boat most of the year. I do not have to have an address in Mo either. Because I am a Kansas resident I have to tag my trailer in KS. The hailing port is even Shawnee, KS.

Ks charges annual property tax, Mo doesn't. In leu of sales tax and property tax in Mo I will pay $678.50 then I think $5.00 a year to keep the documentation with the coasties then I believe $28.00 every three years to MO (but not sure). Also when you document you are actually regisering a mortgage with the Coast Guard so your loans interest is tax deductible.

stevebaretta 04-13-2004 08:24 PM

Damn!!!!!!

Scott Morehead 04-13-2004 11:19 PM

My boat is documented and it took about 4 mos last year. I too have had the problem with being pulled over because of not havin the registration numbers on the hull. After showing the documentation papers was no problem.

Re: Document a boat

Brian (TannedFat) When I was starting my documentation they asked me if I wanted to do it in Kansas or Missouri. I asked which is cheaper?? She told me that Kansas was because the fee was something like $300.00 instead of $500.00. She didn't mention anything at all about the annual poperty tax in either state!! So I wen't with Kansas!! If this is the case, I'M PISSED!!!! I'm calling them right now!!!!

FunHome 05-18-2004 03:27 PM

Re: Document a boat

She just said that Property tax in Missouri is a county assessment, so each county would be different. Here in Wyandotte County in Kansas they really started to crack down on this kind of thing and want you to register everything including garden tractors, small trailer's of all types, etc.

I'm glad I moved to Leavenworth County where supposedly they aren't as strict......

Re: Document a boat

Get place in NH. No sales tax. Adds up fast in some states.

BTW On the documentation you can pick any home port you want no matter where you boat or which state the boat is registered.

Our boat is registered in NH and the only registration marks are the Name and Marco Island , FL has the home port. In NH all you need if it is CG documented is to put the yearly sticker not the hull number.

Re: Document a boat

In my state you don't pay sales tax on a used boat. Doesn't matter how much it cost, or what state it came from. As long as the boat has been licensed prior to the purchase there is no sales tax. You could spend a million dollars on it and still not pay one cent in sales tax.

Here's the good part. Boat and trailer cost about $60 for a three year tag. :D

Documenting one wouldn't pay off for me.
