Does anyone know if this will directly replace the round chrome plug, that comes stock on most boats.

Most of the stock plugs I have seen the base is egg shaped

Mine is round. Maybe someone who has one can measure the base.

The base of the retactable one threads into the unit thru the hull. The light stays flush inside this threaded piece. You have to drill a 1 3/4" hole into the hull to acomodate the threaded piece. My boat had a round Perco base that had a 3/4" hole thru hull. The new hole was alot larger and even the 3 screw holes were covered by the new base. Eddie sells either a white or chrome base.

I was gonna order one with my new boat but was talked out of it due to the many problems encountered after a year or so of use. The problem is as stated in earlier posts, is if it's grabbed and broke and you're fed up with replacing a fairly expensive light, the holes are much bigger than say the Perko's. This means if you decide to go back to the trusty standards you're left with a much bigger hole to deal with.

Otherwise a neat concept...
