All that used motor oil we take out of our motors... did you know???

That it's a FEDERAL offense to transport more than 5 gallons of used motor oil without a hazardous materials license??? I normally bring mine to the local Valvoline oil change place 5 gallons at a time (the max they will take at one time they say). Well, I had 10 gallons and figured I'd take the other 5 gallons to the place two doors down and let them take it. I asked the Valvoline guy if he might take the other 5 and he says sure, but it's a federal offense to transport more than 5 gallons of used motor oil at a time. Hmmm.... guess I was a fellon today!

OldSchool 05-04-2004 04:26 PM

At 24 quarts per oil change (2-12 Qt. pans), I always make 5 trips to dispose of my used oil.

NOT:drool:

hp500efi 05-04-2004 04:54 PM

My local town maintenance shop has a "local only" oil recycling center that is open 24-7 and I have never had a problem bringing more than 5 gallons...but then again maybe they don't even know

Mr Gadgets 05-04-2004 05:37 PM

Mike,
You just need to put a piece of paper with the proper code and info, within reach of the drivers door. In other words, if you die enroute to the oil place and have your window down, they can reach in and read the list of stuff your carrying so they dont die too..
There is a book with all the codes in it.. now if you carry LP in a van.. now your a fellon.. that is what I was told.. oops!!

BigSilverCat 05-04-2004 06:04 PM

I got pulled over by department of transportation and I had my oversize load permit for my boat but i had Propane injection on my truck and he made me pull it out and surrender it to him( the tank was just a barbque grill tank). I ask him how you are supposed to take the tanks home to grill on and he said you have to have it in the open and have a sticker on vehicle.

I told him not to cook his steaks too well done with my propane then he started writing more tickets.

BigSilverCat 05-04-2004 06:05 PM

I wish they gave a national award for tickets, because the last time my lawyer counted them i had over 500. I should get some kind of trophy.

JnT 05-04-2004 06:09 PM

That sucks Bigyellowcat. All the times I've carried "concealed propane" bottles to shrimp, crawfish and crab boils. They would put be under the jail!

dyno 05-04-2004 06:15 PM

Too Funny...... I'm a bad man!:)

traviss 05-04-2004 10:01 PM

usaully take it too the oil change places. but when in a jam it goes in the woodchuck holes.... We have 3 eyed wood chucks with 5 legs

Chris L 05-04-2004 11:25 PM

I put it on the wood we have piled up for the weekend bonfires. Smokes a bit at first.but does a fine job of chasing all the bugs away.

Waterfoul 05-04-2004 11:36 PM

I know a few small shops that heat with it. Just dump it in and light the fire!!

rbtnt 05-04-2004 11:56 PM

Friend heats his boat building with used oil. Makes it easy to unload oil from two 10 quart pans and a powerstroke.

PhantomChaos 05-05-2004 12:24 AM

Geeez! Here in California we just dump it down the drain! Why risk spillin it in your pimp daddy ride?

brian41 05-05-2004 06:31 AM

Bring it all to me I used about 1500 gals. to heat shop this season, but if your worried about the law you can bring it 5 gals. at a time.

24 quarts is 6 gallons Einstein only two trips. I hope you count your golf score better than your oil.

Where you located? I've got 5 gallons and the season hasn't even started.

Helmwurst 05-05-2004 02:05 PM

Hey!!! Bigyellowcat, I am adding your steak comment to my list!!!

NEVER SAY TO A COP
1. I can't reach my license unless you hold my beer. (OK in Texas)
2. Sorry, Officer, I didn't realize my radar detector wasn't plugged in.

3.Aren't you the guy from the Village People?
4. Hey, you must've been doin' about 125 mph to keep up with me. Good job!
5. Are You Andy or Barney?
6. I thought you had to be in relatively good physical condition to be a police officer.
7. You're not gonna check the trunk, are you?
8. I pay your salary!
9. Gee, Officer! That's terrific. The last officer only gave me a warning, too!

10. Do you know why you pulled me over? Okay, just so one of us does.
11. I was trying to keep up with traffic. Yes, I know there are no other
cars around. That's how far ahead of me they are.
12. When the Officer says "Gee Son....Your eyes look red, have you been
drinking?" You probably shouldn't respond with,"Gee Officer your eyeslook glazed, have you been eating doughnuts?"
13. Don't overcook your steaks with my propane tanks!

Waterfoul 05-05-2004 03:06 PM

Where in Michigan are you Brian41??

robyw1 05-05-2004 03:45 PM

Were only allowed to turn 5-Gal per month here. i take mine to Autozone and that is what I was told. You do need to fill out a slip w/ your name address and stuff.

Waterfoul 05-05-2004 08:11 PM

Oh.... too far away to be illegaly hauling my waste oil. :D

ofshore 05-06-2004 05:14 AM

brian41, do you really want waste oil? I work on Goddard road right by Middlebelt so you must be close by and i don't know where you get your oil but if you need more i can probably get it for you. Let me know, Eric.

brian41 05-06-2004 07:18 AM

I am on Merriman between Eureka and Penn. I get most from servicing my costumers and local trucking co. I also get some from customers that change their own oil.You work only about 3 miles from me give me a call 734-942-4832 Brian

BadDog 05-06-2004 08:08 AM

Our local recycling place only takes 2 gallons at a time. I usually roll in with about 20 gallons in the van. This place is staffed by prisoners who are serving a short sentence for whatever and are not considered an escape or danger to the public.

Here is how it goes. Pull in at a slow time and go straight over to the unloading area. Pop the hatch and they see 20 or so gallon jugs right next to a cold 12 pack in a sack with ice. Just casually ask if you can unload ALL of this and they look around, say sure and they have a great lunch. Works every time!

jb 05-06-2004 08:52 AM

my friends burn theirs in the "Bonfires" they have!!
