32 Skater vs. 35 Motion

I have a buddy of mine interested in attaining comparitive information on the 32 skater (old style) vs. 35 motion). The 36 skater is out of his price range so I won't bother comparing them for him.

Has anyone had both boats or ridden in both.

Setup will most likely be 800 HP blower motors on 4's, 5's or 6's.

Comparative interests lie in speed, handling, rough water capability, efficiency, resale value and up front cost.

I haven't been in a 35 motion yet so I can't judge.

Any help would be great,

Thanx.

As far as resale goes Skater is to the Cats what Cigarette is to the Vees. I have not been in a Motion at speed so I can't help there.

P-

Thank you for the reply. I knew the Skater would be better on resale. If the motion was a better boat in the rough the resale wouldn't be as important.

I just haven't yet had the opportunity to run one and don't know what they are like.

I am sure there are a few fellow OSO'ers who have run or raced them and will be able to help.

Thanx again,

Whirly.

I’ve been in both and for a pleasure boat the Motion is the way to go. Just my.02.

Resale will be much higher with the Skater 32.

I drove a 35 Motion w/1000's at 125mph with throttle @3/4 (may do a little over 130) and it handled great so I bought a 30 with O/B's.

I've watched this boat run with a 32 Skater w/900's and they ran very even, till the rough stuff. The Motion seemed to handle a little better and starting pulling away.

Both of these boats ran together in 2000 in Baltimore in P1 class, the 35 Motion finished 2nd and the Skater 3rd.(Both open cockpit 1/4 canopy's) The 32 How Sweet it is full race Skater, won.

I know Motion shut down production some time back. Does anyone know if they started up agian, or sold the company?

Thanx guys,

Great info. I always wonder how much of it is setup and team ability and how much is the boat. Does 3 feet make a huge difference?

It all makes a big difference. 3ft makes a boat able to span the waves better. Plus the Motion has a wider tunnel and beam 8'6" vs 9"1".

eMotiondriver,

Great point, I wasn't aware of the beam difference. 7" in the tunnel will make a difference.

Thanx.

In F-3 a 35 motion and new 32 skater raced each other a bunch of times. I think the motion won every time, but our 36 skater beat them both easy.

Till our lovely bravos blew up. Fun racing.

Curtis,

Gota love those bravos:)

You mentioned it was a new 32 Skater, the new deep tunnel (32 B). If so, that's substantial, I know the new 32 skater is a more efficient and better rough water boat than the old one.

If so, the 35 Motion might be a better choice. The laminate schedule on the Skater is lighter and stronger than the Motion. I have heard the motions have shown some delam in harsh conditions. Has anyone run into this?

The 36 skater is an obvious choice, it's just a tad expensive.

Thanx,

Whirly

My Motion and my friends have seen some harsh conditions and my 30 is a very light layup and have had no hull problems. Both are 2000 hulls.

What Motion are you looking at?

Whirlygig 05-09-2004 06:06 PM

I don't have one in mind.

Have just started to learn about the motions.

I am glad to hear yours is running strong.

I thought an old race boat might be the way to go and do a conversion. Undy Trauth ran "Udderly Fantastic" in the mid ninties. I don't know what happen to that boat but there must be a few still out there.

Have you looked at a 36 Spectre?

Spectre Man 05-09-2004 08:38 PM

I have to say guys.. that my 36' Spectre is one fabulous boat! The boat runs, the boat handles, the boat goes through almost anything my lake can dish out and it looks great with a Grafik EFX painht job. What more could you ask for! Checkout my avatar, that is my boat and I love it. I keep it on Smith Moutain Lake in my boathouse. It has 675 K.E.s and sportmasters with ITS running a 1:26 ratio with 15 1/2 X 36 lab referneced 4-blades. Today, with a 5/8 tank of fuel in sticky water with a lot of humidity with 2 people in the boat, it ran 127mph. I made 4 runs... North, South, East and West and got 127mph each time. Talk about happy! Next month, I may let Brian Jones of JMI punch it up to 845hp and put on a pair of Herrings.

Spectre Man,

Fantastic ride. I love the Spectres, I am just afraid they haven't been out long enough for the depreciation to catch up. I would agree that there is no comparison between the 36 Spectre and the 32 skater or 35 motion. The tunnel is much deeper on the Spectre and it has length.

Maybe if my friend could find an old beat up one with a tired drivetrain and torn interior :) Wish full thinking anyway, congrats on your 36.

I believe the 34 Activator cat is still for sale, anyone know the scoop on that boat (Billy Mauf's old race boat)?

I didn't want to scare a potential cat owner away with the number I told you, pecker head....

Al at Elite powerboats is refurbishing one right now with brand new 500 efi's and sportmaster drives with the ITS systems. Don't know how much he will be asking. His ads are in the magazines, if you want to call him.

Whirlygig 05-10-2004 10:48 AM

Thanx Open Wide,

I see your Avatar, are you running a skater? If so, which one.

MY 32 SKATER WAS THE ONE THAT RACED IN 2000 AND IT RAN AS HARD AS THOSE GUYS WITH 600 HP SMALL BLOCKS

Strip Poker 388 05-10-2004 03:47 PM

I would consider the 36 Spectre I have seen some in the high 100's. I would assume the skater would be in the same price range or higher???

There is a dealers ship here that has one here with 500 efi pro charged ,needs drives , I think around 160K. Just need some cosmetics .

Rob

Whirlygig 05-10-2004 04:51 PM

Rob,

Which one was for sale less drives? A Spectre or Skater?

Which marina?

Merlin, everybody knows YOUR Skater :) I still have your stroker small blocks in mind :)
