Air Conditioning???

What length and manufacture of boat would I have to look at to get into a generator and air situation?

I want to stay with the performance boat look with twins but DO NOT want the wider beam day-cruiser style boat.

Scarab????Formula???? Wouldn't be looking at new and the boat would only be ran on a lake. Would like to see it hit 60 mph.

Any suggestions on manufactures and models?

My 31 Sonic has AC....room for a Genny too!

Sydwayz 05-12-2004 09:56 AM

Look at Sonic. the 31SS, 358, 386, 42, and 45 will all fit AC, and the 31, 386, 42, and 45 can have a Genset.

My 38 Special has A/C but no genny:( They were available on this boat, but whoever ordered it new didn't order one.:(

BillR 05-12-2004 10:44 AM

My 34' PQ has a/c & heat. No gen set though.
You can get everything on the 38' PQ. :p

GregP 05-12-2004 11:16 AM

My Formula (for sale by some coincidence) has air and was built with a genset (wiring and plumbing still there but the genny was removed before I bought it).

GLH 05-13-2004 06:20 AM

I have AC at my house that's enough, on the boat it's just another thing that'll go t!ts up fast.
Besides to cool off... that's what the lake is for.

Our black thunder has air, and plenty of room to sleep, and we can go 70.
If you overnight air conditioning is pretty important.

Just installed a 9,000 BTU Mermaid Air into my Sonic 45SS. Fit like a glove, fairly lightweight too.

Don't know how we were living before it; what a difference it makes. Got it from these guys, good service and support with questions I had: https://citimarinestore.com/en/184-m...ioning-boat-ac

Next up I'm considering purchasing a small gen set, apparently it can fit in the 45 without much issue. One thing I don't like is the idea of the weight it will add (these things start at 300+ pounds in the lower kW range)... not trying to slow down!

If anybody has experience with a gen set in their 45 (or close), what did you go with, and has it affected performance any?

New AC units now are 12 volt. Just need two batteries to run 7 hours before batteries kick.
need no stinking Genny

What's the easiest 12v AC unit for a small houseboat?

Anyone ever run a portable AC unit off a small inverter type generator such as a Honda 2000?

I know a guy who does... Would not recommend it.

Get a real set up or leave well enough alone. Just my $.02

BTW - I will have a 5KW Kohler with 700 hours up for sale in a few weeks if anyone is looking for a genny. PM for details.

I just set up my 38zx donzi with a Honda 2200. Runs great with 2 generators paired together. 1 Honda 2200 will run my A/C, refrigerator, and Battery charger, but it’s running wide open. They will run out if fuel in 4 hours. I ran a fuel line with a fuel pump, with quick connects to the generators. Never run out of fuel again. It’s not factory or proper, so be safe and smart about it. C0 detector and smoke detectors are a must.

6 k unit should do you fine. Two or three batteries and inverter should do just fine. Then all else fails use a baby 2000 k Honda on swim deck. Co2 sensor downstairs a must when running a gen

Got a link to one of these? I‘m not sure I’m finding what you’re referring to.

I can't find that damn 12 volt unit. It's only on smaller units like 5k. Let me search again. B back.

I ran out of time calculating this but looking at that 12 Vdc unit at the mid level and thinking you don't want to kill the batteries (say only go 80% discharge), looks like you would need 4 of these JUST for the AC. I was using 7 hours.

https://www.batteriesplus.com/batter...7m/sli27agmdpm

Then think of the load on your alternators to get these charged back up. Seems to me a small gen set may still be better, and if you ever are at the dock easy to plug in. But I would like to look into dedicated deep cycle batteries and finish the calculations.

Wifey wants to head to dinner and band so it has to be later. :)
