OT-forklifts

I know this really belongs in the off topic section, but I was hoping for the greater exposure GD gets. I'll punch the thread when it's due.

Do any members specialize or know forklifts? I'm looking at really cheap one, but it has a bad transmission. How hard/expensive are these to fix? I think it's a Yale, 4,000lb, propane.

Re: OT-forklifts

I have 11 forklifts from 2,000 lb. to 30,000 lb., and it just depends on model and age of the lift. I can look in to it if you have this information.

Re: OT-forklifts

Tim, I know of a really decent "down to earth" forklift repair guy if you care to ask him. He repairs all of mine and is very reasonable and honest.

MW (?) forklifts in Waukesha, Jim is owner 59/164 bypass...by Don Jacobs...has a TON of new and used. This guy ships parts stuff all over North America. You can also give him a call for another opinion. I'm sure he has alot of cheap deals.

Re: OT-forklifts

Downtown-I've been trying to contact them for some time now. Can't leave a message because the box is full and nobody ever picks up. I'm really trying to a hold of them because I know they have a big lot full of burned up junk that would be perfect.

HP-please do get me that name & number. I need to know if this thing is going to be repairable.

War-hopefully this info will help: Hyster, S50XL, S/N A187V02290E
All that I know is that trans is bad. The forklift won't move. Nothing more.

Re: OT-forklifts

Cord,,,,my advice is to stay away from the guy in Waukesha...unless you are strictly buying some part that is non mechanical... We have bought some used forks from him..anything else look out...

I e-mailed ya the info.

He'd be OK for a whole lift? I'm only looking to spend a couple of hun, so I'm proably buying a POS anyways. Hard to get ripped off when you asked them to.

Re: OT-forklifts

Tim,
I'm in the forklift biz.

Automatic transmissions in forklifts
have whats called an inching circuit,
this basically bleeds off clutch pack
pressure when the inching/ brake pedal
is depressed, ( it acts like a clutch in
a manual transmission)

I believe on that model of unit, there's
a linkage from the pedal to the valve
body.

Check and see if it's moving accordingly.

That's going to be the "cheap" fix, anything
else, ........$$$$$

Re: OT-forklifts

Yea, I don't own the lift yet. The thing is $600 as it lays. I presume the guy had somebody come in and diagnose it, and if they did, they would have found that easy fix. For the sake of being protected, lets assume that it's something major in the trans. Are these things available used? Is it something that I can replace myself or must it be done in the shop? Next, just what numbers are we talking here?

Last year I needed a forklift and was able to find a decent one in South Carolina on Ebay. It is a Cat and with shipping I had less than $5K into it. I just did a quick search and spotted this one. I don't know what your really looking for but... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...815183344&rd=1

Re: OT-forklifts

I actually considered that one. The problem is that I need to pick from 11'. That one is just short.

Re: OT-forklifts

I never bought anything from him. I sold him a used Peterbilt truck 5-6 yrs ago. He has a huge operation, but that is as much as I know. HP sounds like he has good connections. Just an option.

Re: OT-forklifts

Tim,
They're some forklift junkyards out there that
will sell used transmissions.

Some of these guys also sell rebuilt.

Removing the transaxle is a pretty major job,
unless you have another forklift there to
remove the mast, and then the transaxle.

$$$$$,

We did a transmission on a XM (newer than a XL) model
recently, as I recall, it was in the $ 2K neighborhood.

Quite honestly,
$ 600 isn't that great of deal with a major
component bad.

That machine went out of production around
10 years ago.

There are ton's of used 5000# cushion tired forklifts out
there, (most lift a minimum of 10 feet 10 inches) you shouldn't have too hard of a time finding a decent piece.

Re: OT-forklifts

So, just where are you going to park that thing Tim?? Next to the molds in the driveway????? :D

Cord 05-17-2004 08:18 PM

Re: OT-forklifts

Thanks for the advice J. Guess I'll pass on that one. I was kinda liking it because it came with power steering. These older cheap machines are hard to find with power steering.

Mike-that issue has been solved! The mold will be out shortly after our loto trip.

Re: OT-forklifts

BTW-what is a cushion tire? A solid tire is a solid tire, isn't it?

mcollinstn 05-17-2004 10:35 PM

Re: OT-forklifts

cushion versus pneumatic...

we put a rebuilt trans in a CAT T120C ten years ago. It still cost $2700 for the trans and that was a swap out. They aren't cheap. If I had been slow in the shop, we'd have tried to tackle the innards ourself, but this crap always happens when you can't spare a split second...

How about a BOAT. :) I think you don't need to expend any more energy on anything but a boat. Now get cracking. This is what I think of the person who posted before me, whoever it is. :stupid: :)

hp500efi 05-18-2004 06:16 AM

Re: OT-forklifts

Cord, solid tire is a "all rubber tire" ... solid from the rim to the outer edge whereas a pneumatic tire is a tire that has either air inside like a conventional tire or is filled with foam to lessen the chance of a flat.

We have pneumatic tires on ours because it is easier to ride the lift out on the asphalt. A solid tire is really meant for smooth surfaces only like a warehouse or trucking terminal. A solid tire lift can be run outdoors but you need to be extra careful as there is no give in the tires and every bump is felt on the lift.

hp500efi 05-18-2004 06:18 AM

Re: OT-forklifts

oh, BTW, the solid tire lifts suck in rain and snow ..... not sure if tires can be swapped.

Cord 05-18-2004 07:24 AM

Re: OT-forklifts

Yea, but what is the difference between a solid and a cushion tire? A airless tire with a little give? And I do agree on the pneumatic tires. It's annoying when the tower rattles all day.

Mitch-I have this weekend dedicated to the boat. With some luck I'll be able to pull the engine in my drive way. With some luck.
