Pamela Rose went aground.......that left a mark!!!!
Noticed a good sized boat being pulled out of the water next to the Lido Dry Stack last weekend by crane. I was 300 feet way, and I said to myself.....that sure is a funny looking bottom on that boat the way it curves in half way.
Later I found out that it was the Pamela Rose, one of the main bait boats that services Newport Harbor. Today I had a chance to walk over an take a few pics. They say it's fixable........ http://www.newportbait.com/pictures/125.jpg |

Steel is for real!! That is the main reason that I wouldn't buy a large fiberglass yacht. Glass is great for the go fast stuff, but if I'm going to be a couple hundred miles off shore I want steel. Imagine hitting a floating shipping container in the middle of the night. As long as you keep a steel boat painted it will last practically forever.

Thats right Rat. My parents just crossed the Atlantic in a 45ft Sailboat. They hit a sleeping whale, had flying fish all over the deck and in the Doldrums (a place where all the crap ends up in a big circle that does not move) they saw Containers and enough wood and debris to build a city. If it were not for radar and sonar they would have punched a hole in it many times. How would you like to spend 14 days watching for crap.

That kind of crap scares the $hit out of me!! Early season boating in the Chesapeake Bay can be very hair raising!

Wow Phantom...thanks for sharing. Cool pics! Glad it's being repaired.
Hit a sleeping whale? Wow - now that's a story to tell. LOL |
Re: Pamela Rose went aground.......that left a mark!!!!
In the first pics it looks like all it needs is a torch and some hammers to pund it out. Then I saw the keel was kinked. Talk about major rework!
Like Dock rat said "Steel is for real!!" and I agree. If I was to buy an ocean going cruiser it would definately be steel. Check out this line of yachts. If I ever hit the lotto this is where I'm going. http://www.capehornyachts.com/ |

Re: Pamela Rose went aground.......that left a mark!!!!
There was a 65' fishing boat that beached up here in the middle of the night about 6 months ago. It was a wood hull and tore a "small" hole in the side. They couldn't get it off the beach and had to cut it up! Worst part was the owner operator just bought it and did not have insurance on it yet! The loss of the boat is bad enough but then the govnt charges for clean up and salvage.
