I would look in install/uninstall see if its in there and then you can uninstall it.
Also check this link to post on the same topic. http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=78505

Re: need some computer help!!!

goto www.lavasoftusa.com . install and run adaware, being sure to update it to the most recent def file before you do. It's pretty good at catching these homepage hijackers, as they are known.

Re: need some computer help!!!

Dave,

It's an adware level infection. Lots of ways to get rid of it, including the suggestions above. One you eradicate it, buy a full blown protection system like Symantec Anti-Virus program which will protect your system on just about every level. For more info, do a search for "hijack" on Symantec.com and you'll find info on removal tools.

Try this link:
http://www.symantec.com/search/

Types of threat

Adware
Programs that secretly gather personal information through the Internet and relay it back to another computer, generally for advertising purposes. This is often accomplished by tracking information related to Internet browser usage or habits.

Adware can be downloaded from Web sites (typically in shareware or freeware), email messages, and instant messengers. A user may unknowingly trigger adware by accepting an End User License Agreement from a software program linked to the adware.

Dialers
Programs that use a system, without your permission or knowledge, to dial out through the Internet to a 900 number or FTP site, typically to accrue charges.

Hack Tools
Tools used by a hacker to gain unauthorized access to your computer. One example of a hack tool is a keystroke logger -- a program that tracks and records individual keystrokes and can send this information back to the hacker.

Hoax
Usually an email that gets mailed in chain letter fashion describing some devastating, highly unlikely type of virus. Hoaxes are detectable as having no file attachment, no reference to a third party who can validate the claim, and by the general tone of the message.

Joke Programs
Programs that change or interrupt the normal behavior of your computer, creating a general distraction or nuisance. Harmless programs that cause various benign activities to display on your computer (for example, an unexpected screen saver).

Remote Access
Programs that allow another computer to gain information or to attack or alter your computer, usually over the Internet. Remote access programs detected in virus scans may be recognizable commercial software, which are brought to the user's attention during the scan.

Spyware
Stand-alone programs that can secretly monitor system activity. These may detect passwords or other confidential information and transmit them to another computer.

Spyware can be downloaded from Web sites (typically in shareware or freeware), email messages, and instant messengers. A user may unknowingly trigger spyware by accepting an End User License Agreement from a software program linked to the spyware.

Trojan Horse
A program that neither replicates nor copies itself, but causes damage or compromises the security of the computer. Typically, an individual emails a Trojan Horse to you-it does not email itself-and it may arrive in the form of a joke program or software of some sort.

Virus
A program or code that replicates; that is, infects another program, boot sector, partition sector, or document that supports macros, by inserting itself or attaching itself to that medium. Most viruses only replicate, though, many do a large amount of damage as well.

Worm
A program that makes copies of itself; for example, from one disk drive to another, or by copying itself using email or another transport mechanism. The worm may do damage and compromise the security of the computer. It may arrive in the form of a joke program or software of some sort.

about:blank problem solver I had the same problem and spent most of yesterday trying to deal with it. I found a great website devoted to this issue. Get SpyBot and also Killbox, two great free programs. Also, get the shredder program. All of these are detailed in the thread above.

Hi Dave,

since it looks like these guys have you covered... welcome to BVYC. They read your name at Wednesday's meeting. I launched last weekend between storms and ran from Bolles Harbor to LP only to find a slight sinking problem with the boat. Either the shift cable hose (OMC) or the seal around the transom housing. Gonna hafta pull port engine to find out/fix. Counterman's has it because this is my busy season at work.
Won't be back in for about 10 days. Boo.
Gonna launch the little boat.

Anyway, welcome to BVYC. I think we vote you in next meeting and then you get sworn in the meeting after that.

I use Ad-aware version 6.0... I have found that Spy-bot .. search and destroy actually has some "data minors" in their program... weird... scary too... but I've had great luck with Ad-aware.. and it's free from lavasoft... I just updated and ran it today... found 3 new "infections"... I had Spy-bot before and it missed a lot of things.

Dave Also Microsoft estimates half the computer crashes are caused by Spy-ware so get a good Program in your machine..The one I use just upgraded the finger prints to 24032 of the little Bastards..They usually include home page protection.

I have Lavasoft and Spybot. I would have to agree that Lavasoft seems to find junk almost everyday.

Re: need some computer help!!!

thanks guys. still try'n to get rid of this one. i have spybot and it works well except on this one. ad-aware will detect the problem and it lets me delete it but it comes right back. from what i have found there is a hidden re-loader in this bug that is very difficult to locate. luckily my PC still lets me surf the web (for the most part) i was trying to bring up the symantic home page but i was redirected to some other software site that "looked" like symantic. lucky i was paying attention to the URL and somthing didnt look right. took me a minute or to but i noticed it wasnt symantic. had to sneak in through a dogpile search.

Phknlwyr- thanks for that link, i have got some good info of that forum so far. i am going to get killbox and try it. hey is this kinda internet hijacking legal? i mean these guys altered important info on my PC with no permision from me and replaced it with all their worthless crap and to top that off want me to pay them to remove it. i keep getting this pop up now that offers virus removal. this kinda crap really pisses me off. almost feel like my house was broken into ya know.

fund razor- i was out in LP saturday night and was keeping an eye out for a 260 Scorp. my friend put his cat in over the weekend so i should be out there pretty regularly although i am still a few weeks from being in myself. hope ya make it back in the water soon. thanks for the info on BVYC. actually i havent heard anything from them yet but i guess i will now. when do they teach me the secret hand shake:D :D

Re: need some computer help!!!

OK Dave.... if the "bug" is in your "cache"... you have to do a couple of things to get rid of it... try this.... Click on "start"... click on "settings"... click on "control panel"... when the control panel opens.. find "system"... click on system... there will be some tabs at the top... one will read "performance"... click on this tab.... down at the bottom.. it will say in a box "advanced settings".. click on this.... you will see a tab that says "troubleshooting".. click on this.... then you will see some boxes... you need to check "disable system restore" check "disable system write behind" check "disable file sharing"... then you have to reboot and run Adaware again... it should clean out the cache this time... and hopefully your problem will be gone... then you need to go back to the same place and restore your setting as they were before... good luck...

Re: need some computer help!!!

Dave,
I had the same thing happen, I run SpyBot, Adware, etc etc all the time, still didn't catch or correct this thing, drove me nucking futz  Try DL'ing a proggy called HijackThis v1.97.7 and run it, there is (should be) a readme with it. Do a yahoo or google search with the 'exact web page address' that keeps showing up in the address bar and there should be hits and discussions on it. HijackThis will find the file that has commandered your machine and then let you remove it.

It may also find some legit and valid files that you don't need to delete. In desparation, I deleted all the files (pests) it identified and ended up having to reload some softwares, but nothing major, just some very minor inconveniences. Afterall said and done it fixed the issue and nothing major was destroyed. Blamed my kids for that one, but not really sure it was them or where it came from? :)

If you can find the proggy email me and I'll send it yo you.

Install the following CWCrusher , Ad Aware , Spy Bot , and Hijackthis . This website can help you with the problem if it persists.

fixed it!!!!

used these steps
1. Scan with HijackThis
2. Stop the dllhelp.exe process in task manager.
3. Delete the file dllhelp.exe (Note - Chech the prefetch folder for an associated prefetch file).
4. Use HijackThis to correct HKCU related to the browser (R0 & R1) and the HKCU Run C:\windows\dllhelp.exe (04).
5. Restart the computer.

thanks for all the help guys. had a friend of mine come over and help. (Curious G here on the board) we used the suggestions above and did some poke'n around on our own. seems to be OK now. :D :D :D

Brand New Computer! Spyware?

My Computer was so bogged down, ran all of the suggested fixes, spybot S&D, Adware, Etc. couldn't clean it up, I will try again in a few days, that I went out and bought a new one. I did the set up, and logged on to Aol to set up my account, (didn't even go to OSO) logged off, and ran Aol's Spyware search and fix, and there was (1) threat, deleted it, ran again, (1) threat, I think it was called Alexis,,,,, on the third spyware delete it came back (0),, can you get spyware from only loging onto your ISP???? do you have to download something, or open up e-mails?? I delete anything with an attachment,, and I will never even open anything I don't recognize,, how does spyware travel?

Philip

Re: need some computer help!!!

Alexis is also the name of a file in Windows. I believe Ad-Aware 6 does a workaround because of this.

A lot of times these "exe" files get inserted into your "start-up" menu.... Whenever you download a program.. or install a program... they insert themselves into the start-up menu... any time you open a file over the internet that has an "exe" ending.. it is an "execution" file and can reconfigure your computer to any way the program wants... there is a free program called "Start-up mechanic".. it looks at your start-up program and tells you what is useful and what is worthless.. all those things in your start-up menu begin running as soon as you boot up your computer.. Installed from the factory are going to be programs for games... do you really want to have a game program running all the time?... Just taking it out of the start-up menu doesn't remove or delete the program.. it just frees up resources that can be used elsewhere. Download and run "Start-up Mechanic" and see how bogged down your computer really is... If you are running windows 98 or newer... Click "Start" ... click "run" type in "msconfig"... this will open a system utility and you can click on the start-up tab and see how much is running... good luck... Do a google search for Start-up Mechanic.. it's easy to find and install.

I had that :about blank: crap for months. Ran everything I could to get rid of it. Would be ok for a few logons then suddenly back again. Finally I had the brilliant idea to erase the desktop internet explorer icon which I always used to launch the internet and then saved a new icon manually. Haven't had the problem since... :blaster: This "bug" was actually resident in my shortcut icon.

BT

Philip 06-07-2004 07:28 PM

Reed, thank you

I am going to try all of your suggestions, it is just going to take me some time,, I am not that Savvy,, Blue thunder, that is a good Idea,, I am going to try deleting the Icon also,, I run Spybot, and Aol's spyware program,, and spybot seems to identify more threats,, the only thing I don't understand,, is downloading spybot, or any of these anti spyware programs, is like inviting the enemy into your computer????? am I right???

Re: need some computer help!!!

The "about:Blank" is the default Windows Internet Explorer setting, nothing abnormal about that whatsoever. Use TOOLS - INTERNET OPTIONS - to change it to whatever homepage you want. If the setting isn't accepted when you relaunch, then you have a little bugger to deal with. That's where all these utilities come into play. Most of the utilities do more harm than good. It's easier not to get infected in the first place.

I could write you a full "war and peace" about spyware, worms, viruses, etc. but the info is already out there. All the major e-Mags in the PC business have the information if you really want to learn what all these programs do. My only advice is never go surfing or open email without something like Norton's full anti-virus software. If you don't recognize the sender or subject in an email, delete it. Stay clear of clicking on popup ads, close them using taskbar or better yet, get a popup blocker and only use it when surfing unfamiliar sites. You need to be diligent about your surfing habits, and the software programs you load on your computer, pure and simple. You're not going to catch something from logging into your ISP unless it's a fly by night.

Don't freak out about Spyware, it's not all bad. You need to find out what it's doing or reporting back to the server layer it's sending info to. Most of it comes from sites with porn, gambling, file sharing, etc. Almost all mp3 music share programs like Kazaa and others contain spyware with hooks to the program. If you delete the spyware, it will render the program inoperable until you reinstall it. A real alternative is to start buying the singles you want from somebody like Walmart.com or Buy.com and pay the 88 cents for the song. :) Or only swap MP3's with people you know and can trust.

Finally, be very careful downloading and install "free" software packages like search bars, icons generators, avatar generators, etc. In almost every case, they're loaded with the stuff causing these problems. Nothing is free. :D

Keith 06-07-2004 07:53 PM

Re: need some computer help!!!

Google Searchbar and Alexis Searchbar have what some consider to be "spyware" loaded. They report your surfing info back to the engines. This type of spyware actually helps when you're shopping or searching for something in particular. It can help narrow search results and filter some of the nonsense you might normally see. Personally I'd rather sift through the search results than have them decide what I want to see and what I don't want to see. In otherwords, I'll filter it.
