curious how he's making out with lower units...they've been my only complaint. the port (counter rotator) housing cracks dead center above prop shaft and shoots up and around the left side. happened to previous owner, he welded the case, i re-cracked, then blew lower shortly there after. bought a brand new lower from merc 7 weeks later same thing. supposed to be a weak link in the counter's cause of how the gear sets are ?

Generally those cracks occur if the lower unit is not properly tightened...or in one case I heard of ...missing a bolt completely.....

One thing I can speak directly to is you must retighten all key bolts/studs etc after every use...most don't need it...but if only one comes loose...look out.

THe second item..and even more imporatant is check your lower unit lube after each use........look for shavings or water.

If you find any water evidence replace your shift shaft seal immediately...... if you find a lot of water...tear down the unit and inspect everything.

i re-torque my lowers after every use, and the oil gets changed every 8-10 hours. i was told by a merc tech that its usually the lefts because all the torque is loaded up on a different section of the lower.

Bern on my 300 promaxs the only lower problem I have had is with the right hand unit. I cracked one case on the bullit Just in front of the fwd gear and I have cracked 4-5 propshaft bearing carriers on the replacement case. No issues with the lh unit.

I change my gear case oil every 3 times I go out or about every 5 - 10 hrs. Might be overkill and definitely not a cat so I don't come out of the water as much but I feel better safe than sorry.....

I'm Glad those are still performing good for you, I really missed them after my swap out. Now, I'm glad I just out.

My Yamaha runs GREAT,

Is anyone else seeing differences in water psi. My counter rotating lower is currently running 15-17 psi (right now the motors are very low), my standard rotating lower is only running 12-13 psi. Anyone know what might cause this?
