Re: does anybody know what this is?
The Bradstone Challenger was built for a timed race around Great Britain. The race was due to start yesterday but was postponed due to weather concerns.
Round Britain Record Attempt There's info on the boat here too. |
Re: does anybody know what this is?
From the site thanks Iggy.
Bladerunner - A Unique Philosophy Bladerunner is an 'Air Entrapment Monohull' or AEM. Pioneered by ICE Marine, the AEM is radically different to a conventional monohull, in its dramatic twin tunnels that flare out from either side of the extremely slender twin stepped hull, finishing with sharp knife-like sponsons at the sides. This unique combination gives the Bladerunner 51 phenomenal aerodynamic lift, improving performance and significantly softening the ride over conventional monohulls by compressing the air inside the tunnels to add a cushioning effect. Another advantage is that the centre of lift is located much further aft than would be the case in a comparable high performance catamaran, providing a safer and more level ride in rough seas. Construction: Hand laid seamless composite structure Gel coat Biaxial and undirectional glass fibre with iosphthalic polyester resin Hull: Balsa core with single skin below water line Deck: Divinycell foam core sandwich structure Hull and deck stiffened with longitudinal stringers and transverse bulkheads 12mm acrylic front windscreen Engines (Inboard Diesel): Twin 18 litre CAT C18s 1000hp Performance: Maximum speed: 80+mph (70+knots) Fuel capacity: 440 gallons (2000 litres) Range: Up to 320 miles Dimensions: length: 46 ft (14m) overall length: 51 ft (15.5m) beam: 14 ft 6 in (4.4m) draft: 2 ft 9 in (0.9m) dry weight: approx. 11 tonnes http://www.roundbritainrecord.com/images/BR-51Bow.jpg http://www.roundbritainrecord.com/images/BR-51Top.jpg http://www.roundbritainrecord.com/im...-51ProfLWL.jpg http://www.roundbritainrecord.com/im...rofileStbd.jpg |
Re: does anybody know what this is?
OK, thanks guys... I really don't see CAT C18s as being the obvious choice for this kind of thing. I bet it would be faster with two Seateks. However, the biggest problem comes from who's actually holding the current record. It's Fabio Buzzi in his Record! which has four MTU 12V2000 M91 diesels for a total of 6000hp. It has a similar sort of speed capability (approx. 75 mph) but it's a 30 ton boat (dry) which is quite a significant advantage in anything but perfectly flat water. Also, Record! has enough range to avoid fuel stops which these guys will have to do. In other words, I think they are the underdogs, the outsiders... which makes this so fun. I wish them success.

Re: does anybody know what this is?
This boat recently set the 'round Britain record', in under 30 hours.
FYI, the tooling (plug and moulds) were built in the US for ICE Marine, as it was more cost effective. It runs 82mph and is 52 feet long. |
Re: does anybody know what this is?
looks a lot like art carsen boat , rember fountain layed it up .reverse 3 pont hydro they are verry close in nature . :drink:

It's a truely lovely piece of work! The designer 'Lorne Campbell' is pretty well known over here, and a friend of mine. He was responsible I think for the re-vamping of Formula's hulls when they went over to having steps. BTW, 'Round Britain' is a 2000 mile run. Some bumf on Lorne: Lorne Campbell, Consultant, Navatek Ltd., is an independent Naval Architect, Designer and Consultant specializing in the field of high speed power craft for all fields of operation. Apprenticed to Vosper Ltd (1965 - 1970) he attended Newcastle University and Portsmouth Polytechnic. He moved to Fairey Marine and then Rotork Marine before helping to set up Capoco Design Ltd, contract designers for the marine and automotive industries, in 1977. Leaving Capoco in 1981 he has operated, since, as Lorne Campbell Design in the design and consultancy of a wide variety of fast leisure, commercial, military and racing power craft. Offshore racing and power craft he designed have gained 11 world championships, 18 national championships and 7 world speed records as well as numerous individual wins. In 2005, his 51 foot Bladerunner design gained the Round Britain speed record with a time of 27 hours and 10 min – 3.5 hours less than the previous record – while achieving an average speed of 53.4 knots (61.5 mph). He is an Associate Member of The Royal Institution of Naval Architects, a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and serves on the RINA Small Craft Committee cheers JF |

Re: does anybody know what this is?
Hi Everyone,
I see that the Bladerunner has been getting some chat going, so as the sole importer and distributor for the USA, I thought it best to introduce ourselves and be available to answer any questions. The very first 35 is here in St Petersburg, FL. The original 34's are no longer made. Other 35's are spread around the globe with other distributors or clients. The first 51 broke the world record for circumnavigating Great Britain last year. Another is nearing completion for delivery to its' owner. The 35 debuted at the Miami Boat Show in February and has been tested by some of the magazines since then. Reviews are to be published in up coming issues. I'll list the dates and titles as soon as we are notified. The boat was also part of the Poker Runs of America season opener in Sarasota on April 1st and photos should be on their website (www.pokerrunsofamerica.com) soon. I'm not going to go into depth about the boat/design here, but as there seems to be some interest I will make myself available to answer any questions and I look forward to some further debate through the forum. Lastly, to all those that said they wanted one, well I'm your man !!!! Thank you Mark Hawkins |

Are you building one of these in Fort Lauderdale right now off SR 84. There is something that looks exactly like this in a shed, they were priming it a couple of weeks ago ??

It's NEW and REVOLUTIONARY....... not a tired out old idea from the early 70"s...... I am so weary of old wine in new bottles being trotted out and hyped like the arrival of the Messiah. But I did get a good laugh out of the (inevitable) claim that Fountain "created" this concept originally. By the way this is a result of monohull guys seeing all of the early tunnel hulls and adding a healthy dose of Rube Goldberg. T2x |

Re: does anybody know what this is?
DyD ... Yes there is a 51 being fitted out in Lauderdale. It should be ready soon for delivery to the client.
The Trident was a tri-hull just with similar lines and size to the older Bladerunner 34. The "Blade" is a twin stepped Air Entrapment Monohull (AEM). The sponsons are not hulls and do not take any weight. They are there for air entrapment only. The only Bladerunner race boat was the Ice Marine RS6 which ran in UIM a few years ago to promote the project. Of course the Bladerunner 51 recently gained the world record for circumnavigating GB. Hope that helps a little. Regards Mark |
